Selena Jakovec of Ws on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Selena Jakovec and have shared our conversation below.

Selena, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The art of creating lifelike dolls Is taboo. Like clowns, for some people, dolls are creepy or just plain childish. These dolls are works of art that take a lot of time and attention to detail to bring to life. For patients of dementia and altzhimers , they are a god send of peace and calmness and a flash back of a life long forgotten. These works of art also help those who have lost a child or are not able to have children. My hope is that those reluctant would look at this hobby/business in a new light of helping other get peace and joy and to help those that need it find some comfort in holding one of these creations.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Selena , I am the owner and artist at Under the Willow Tree. I make realistic vinyl and silicone baby dolls as well as clothing and accessories for premature babies.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I gave birth to my 1st child. I felt that I could concur the world. The strength , the endurance, mentally and emotionally not to mention the physical strength it takes to create life and the bring it into the world ,it really is a miracle and a phenomenal thing to be apart of. After 4 babies of my own, I am convinced that all women hold a special power that is unmatched!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of success is huge! It’s a battle to make it to the top and once you get there the true fight is on to STAY there. Success bring on a whole new set of rules and expectations. It is scary but very exhilarating to make your way to the level you desire.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
What you see is what you get. It’s exhausting trying to please people that aren’t accepting of your natural self. It’s harder to keep up face than it is to just be yourself. Who wants to keep company with others that dont even know who they truly are? I’d rather be genuine, if you dont like me, that’s ok! I’m not everyone’s cup of tea and I’m ok with that! Find your tribe.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel in the grand scheme of things, yes I am doing exactly what I was born to do..I offerr comfort, joy and peace to those around me in need. That in itself gives me a great sense of accomplishment!
