We recently had the chance to connect with Markat and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Markat, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
My company, DM Entertainment, was hosting our first ever show in San Diego. When it came to securing a sound system and visuals (screen & lasers), we reached out to a ton of places to compare pricing and plans. There was 2 places we were really interested in, however those 2 were the only ones who weren’t responding to us… so we kept trying to put off locking in those rentals. On the very last day we had decided on, just a week before the event, they finally got back to us and helped us put on an amazing show for all of the attendees. One of our main pieces of feedback was actually how good the production of the whole event was.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Markat is a genre-bending EDM producer originally from San Diego, now splitting time between his hometown and the Bay Area. With over eight years of music production under his belt and a lifelong passion for live performance, Markat is paving his way in the bass scene with emotionally charged, high-impact tracks that blur the lines between melodic beauty and raw power.
His signature sound consists of blending melodic dubstep and heavy bass, crafting soaring intros and layered harmonies that erupt into explosive drops. Drawing inspiration from versatile legends like Virtual Riot and Panda Eyes, Markat thrives on pushing genre boundaries. He regularly experiments with trap, future bass, and tearout in his productions.
Before stepping behind the decks, Markat spent much of his youth performing live, developing a deep connection to rhythm, movement, and the energy of a crowd from an early age. That foundation in live performance fuels the percussive energy and dynamic flow of his music today.
Live, Markat brings an emotional and immersive experience to the stage. He’s performed at events and venues across California, including Echo Valley Campout and Mountain Vineyard in the Bay, and MAYDAY SD and the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego.
Markat is part of a new wave of producers blending technical skill with heartfelt expression. Whether it’s in headphones or on the stage, his music is made to move you, both physically and emotionally.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationships with my close friends and the people I choose to surround myself with impact me the most. I know that I can rely on them to give me truthful feedback, whether its positive or negative, they can keep me on the right path, celebrate my successes, and help cushion the losses.
There’s been a few times where I’ve had poor judgement or needed an extra push to really strive for what I want, and they are always there to back me up (and I do the same for them).
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
As an introvert, it’s hard for me to push myself to go out and meet people. It’s something I’ve tried to work on over the years, and at one point had made some decent progress on it. However since covid times, I’ve slipped back into the mindset of “what if they don’t like me?”
It’s interesting because during a performance, presentation, or any form of public speaking doesn’t phase me at all, it’s just the small 1 on 1 interactions that make me freeze up. In the music & entertainment industry, this is almost crippling, because of how important connections and networking is.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
This is going to sound really bad but stick around for the explanation and it will make sense: “Anyone can make it” is a massive lie that exists on the internet. While yes, anyone can have a popular video and make money off of it, navigating the space to successfully turn that short lived moment into a lasting impact is incredibly difficult. That doesn’t even mention the small creators trying to grow a platform from nothing. They need to be able to market, create, critique, consume, adapt, its a whole business they have to run on their own. To turn any form of content creation into a full career, you have to be dedicated and disciplined enough to make it happen.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I don’t think I could in the long term. For me, one of the driving forces behind making music is seeing people enjoy themselves to it either at a show or listening on their own. I feel fulfilled when I get to watch people feeling the same emotions I had during the writing process during their listening experience.
