Story & Lesson Highlights with Neka Leslie of Atlanta

Neka Leslie shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Neka, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What battle are you avoiding?
The battle I avoided for a long time was performing live. I’ve always loved writing music and being in the studio, but stepping onto a stage triggered major performance anxiety for me. I used to second-guess everything — my voice, my presence, even whether I deserved to be up there. The fear of being seen, vulnerable and exposed, held me back from touring or doing live shows for years.

But lately, I’ve been facing that fear head-on. I realized that the very thing I was avoiding is where the most growth and connection happens. I’m no longer running from the stage — I’m preparing for it, mentally and creatively. I want to make people feel something, and I know that can’t fully happen if I’m hiding behind the scenes.

So while I wouldn’t say I’ve completely won that battle yet, I’m definitely not avoiding it anymore. I’m training for it — and I plan to show up ready.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Absolutely — here’s a strong, heartfelt introduction that reflects your brand, values, and mission:

Hi, I’m Neka Leslie — a Caribbean-rooted, US-based independent singer, songwriter, and creative visionary blending reggae fusion with soulful storytelling. I’m the founder of *New Legacy Music*, a brand built not just around sound, but around substance — rooted in authenticity, culture, and emotional depth.

My journey hasn’t been the most traditional — I’m a single mother, a healthcare professional, and an artist who’s had to carve out space for myself in a world that often asks us to choose one lane. But I’ve always known I’m here to create meaningful art that uplifts, challenges, and empowers.

What makes my brand unique is the way I merge vulnerability with power. I speak truth — even when it’s uncomfortable — and I stand for integrity, healing, self-worth, and the freedom to live life on your own terms. I’m not interested in being trendy — I’m building legacy. That means intentional music, honest storytelling, and a clear vision for where I’m headed.

Right now, I’m working on a project that represents the next chapter of my sound — something soulful, bold, and raw. It’s about reclaiming identity, owning your story, and stepping into the light — not just as an artist, but as a woman who knows her value.

This isn’t just about music for me — it’s about impact, alignment, and making room for others to do the same.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that overextends to prove my worth. For years, I felt like I had to show up perfectly, carry the weight alone, and be everything for everyone just to feel valued. That version of me was born from survival — she got me through some tough chapters, but she’s not needed anymore. Now, I’m choosing ease, alignment, and mutual energy. I no longer need to earn love, respect, or peace by exhausting myself. I’m releasing that version and making room for softness, trust, and reciprocity.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
One of the most defining challenges of my life was learning how to stand fully on my own — emotionally, financially, and creatively. I stepped into motherhood young and into adulthood with a lot of weight on my shoulders, but I never saw that as something to feel sorry about. It taught me resilience early and forced me to become solution-oriented, spiritually grounded, and mentally unshakable.

Another turning point was realizing how often I overextended myself — in relationships, friendships, and even work environments. I gave my best to situations that couldn’t give me the same in return. But instead of becoming bitter, I became better at discerning where my energy belongs. That’s a strength I now protect at all costs.

I’ve healed — and continue to heal — by owning my story without shame. Through prayer, discipline, solitude, and creativity, I’ve rebuilt myself into a woman I truly respect. I’m not defined by the pain I experienced, but by how I transmuted it into purpose. I didn’t just survive — I evolved. And that shows up in my music, my mindset, and how I walk through life.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely — but it’s the refined version of me. What you see publicly is rooted in the same values, strength, and depth I carry in private. I’m intentional about showing up authentically, but I also protect my peace. I’ve learned that not everything deserves access to the most vulnerable parts of me.

What you see is real — the discipline, the passion, the focus, the creativity — that’s me. But behind that is a woman who’s had to do a lot of internal work to be able to show up with confidence and clarity. So yes, the public version of me is real… she’s just the version that’s done the healing and is clear on her assignment.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When have you had to bet the company?
For me, “betting the company” meant betting on myself — fully. There was a moment when I walked away from stability, comfort, and predictable income to pursue my music and creative business with no safety net. I had to invest my own money, time, energy, and even put my lifestyle on hold to fund my vision.

There was no label, no major backing — just belief. I was building a brand, developing content, learning the business, and creating a product all at once. And I didn’t just bet on the talent — I bet on the discipline behind it. I bet on my ability to learn as I go, pivot when needed, and lead from a place of authenticity.

Every time I choose my purpose over playing it safe, I’m betting the company. And every time I follow through with consistency and integrity, I win — even if the results are still unfolding.
