Carol Killman, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day kicks off at 7:15 AM with a whirlwind of excitement, thanks to my dynamic duo of mini Aussies, Rook and Majesty. After some serious playtime with them, I shift gears to spend quality time with my feathered friend, Chiku. With my furry and feathered companions happily tended to, I steal a little bit of “me time” before fueling up with an apple and firing up my Mac.
That’s when the real adventure begins. As a book editor, I get to embark on a daily journey into someone else’s mind. I see my role as a kind of mind meld, stepping into an author’s brain to bring their words to the next level while honoring their unique voice. It’s a rewarding and deeply creative process.
After a lunch break that includes more fun with the animals, I dive back into the literary world until 5:30 PM. The evening is a relaxing wind-down: dinner for everyone (including the pets, of course!), a park trip with the dogs, and a cozy night in, complete with arts, crafts, and catching up on the latest shows. By 11:15 PM, it’s lights out, and I’m ready to dream of new stories and adventures.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a book editor since 1998, I’ve had the thrilling privilege of giving authors’ words wings. I’ve worked with major publishing houses and independent creators alike, guiding both nonfiction and fiction manuscripts to their polished final form. My journey in the book industry has been a comprehensive one, wearing every hat imaginable: managing editor, acquisitions editor, ghostwriter, creative collaborator, developmental editor, line editor, and copyeditor. I’m always working on a few different projects at once, which takes me to new and exciting places.
My greatest joy is helping authors bring their visions to life. I have a knack for understanding what a project needs at every stage to make it shine. This isn’t just a job for me—it’s my absolute passion, and there’s nothing more exciting than helping a work find its wings.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me to be realistic, I was a force of pure magic. My imagination was a limitless power, capable of conjuring any reality and becoming anything I could possibly imagine in a single, exhilarating moment. I had all the time in the world, and the year 2000 was lightyears away. My consciousness wasn’t confined by the clock—it expanded beyond time itself, living in a realm of infinite potential.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You’re not just going to be okay, you’re going to thrive. There will be times you feel lost or doubt yourself, but those moments are what make you strong. You’re going to find your voice, your purpose, and build a life you absolutely love. You’re going to be so loved—by friends, by family, and in unimaginable ways—and you’ll give so much love in return. Yes, there will be some tough times, but trust me, the amazing moments make the struggles worth it. It all works out.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’m a total “what you see is what you get” kind of person. I was recently looking at my LinkedIn photo—jeans and a tank top, not exactly what you’d call “professional”—and for a second, I thought I should change it.
But then I had a better idea! Who says what “professional” looks like anyway?! I looked it up, and it’s actually about competence, ethical conduct, and reliability.
Well, hey, look at that—I’m a professional! And I’m also silly, serious, deeply passionate, and a little bit of everything else. It’s all one authentic, all-in-one package, and that’s exactly the person you get.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
What if I knew I only had ten years left? The answer is surprisingly simple: I wouldn’t change a thing.
Maybe I’d try to sleep in a little later, but I probably wouldn’t. I’d hate to miss morning playtime with my dogs or my lively moments with my parrot. I’d make sure to spend more time with family, but I’m already doing that, soaking up every shared laugh and conversation.
The big realization is that my life is already full of purpose and passion. I’m not waiting for a wake-up call to start living—I’m already right where I’m supposed to be, cherishing the simple moments that make every day an adventure.
