Julyanna Ortega on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Julyanna Ortega shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Julyanna, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My day usually starts at 4:00am. I get to the cafe and turn on the ovens. The first two hours of the day I work alone, that gives me time to listen to music or a podcast. Being there alone working gives me peace. It is my favorite part of the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Julyanna Ortega, I opened Taller 17 coffee shop 8 and a half years ago. We bake muffins, cookies, rolls, brownies, gallettes, etc. I studied International Relations but I have always been interested in baking. Two years ago I opened La Confianza, a wine bar and restaurant. There we focus on wines made by Mexican women. We have a bit of everything!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I think more than feeling powerful, I have done things I am passionate about, even if I was scared or doubtful it would work. At the end of the day you have to trust yourself and know that even if things don’t turn out how you hoped, you are left with learning experiences that are very valuable.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
When I was young in my teen years I was bullied and that led me to live very tough times. Having supportive people around me and forming new friendships has made a big difference.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes!! Even though there have been time where you are not !00%, my rapport with clients is always authentic and sincere. I genuinely care about how they are or what their favorite dessert is. And I truly feel that people can tell.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes!! Each morning, the fact that I get to do what I love and bring joy to people who come in for their coffee and pastries is something I truly cherish

After almost 9 years of long hours, early mornings, ups and downs, etc. I can honestly say I am passionate about what I do and appreciate each and every person who stands in line to enjoy our bakery and coffee.
It’s a great pleasure to know that for many, we have become part of their daily routine or a must-stop when they come to visit Todos Santos.
