We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lisa Jenkins. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Lisa, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
This is such a great question for a couple of reasons. Up until this past January, my days consisted of working multiple jobs across different industries, and constantly being on the go with little rest included. I had long yearned to have mornings where I could awake with no alarm clock, fully wake up before leaving my bed, and to be able to work out or go for a walk before heading to the office. Right now, a normal day for me includes starting my day with being thankful for having another day to continue walking in my purpose. I service multiple populations within one industry which no longer feels like work. I’ve been able to end my days during the week with time for myself to do the things that refill my cups. This has allowed me the space and energy to improve my diet, exercise more frequently, travel more often, and live out loud.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Clinical Mental Health Therapist who services the behavioral health needs of individuals ages 10 to 60 from a culturally appropriate, trauma-informed perspective. I facilitate clinical group and individual sessions within nonprofit, grammar school, and private practice environments. I routinely develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment data, client need, and targeted short and long-term goals.
My missions are two-fold. One is to help transform, empower, and improve the quality of life for the individuals, families, and organizations I serve by providing behavioral health care services that are safe; ethical; accessible; and compassionate. This is accomplished through my 90-day Broken Pieces Made Whole Curriculum that I am launching August 2025.
While the other, as a Certified Domestic Violence Advocate is to end domestic violence and narcissistic relationships. My app, The Slipout™ launched 9/25/2020 to assist victims of domestic violence with safely escaping and healing. The Slipout™, has been downloaded across 95 countries more than 25,000 times to date.
“With strength comes pain, with strength comes peace”, is the motto that guides my footsteps each day!
I hold a Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from National Louis University. I also hold an Art Therapy Practitioner Certificate from Scholistico. I am a Mental Health First Aider. And most recently, I am currently pursuing a postgraduate certificate in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling from Loyola University at Chicago.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
This was difficult for me to admit. My earliest memory of feeling powerful came when I was 39 years old. That was when I decided that the life I was living at the time no longer served the Lisa I had become. It was then that I put into motion the plans that led to my becoming a 7-time self-published author; global mobile app developer; mental health therapist; and curriculum creator to date. After multiple degrees and certifications, I find power in continuing to heal myself as I assist others in healing themselves.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
In 2017, I stepped from behind the veil of pain and trauma and began telling my story through self-help books and speaking engagements. Through the tears and ugly cries, I learned that I was not the only one who had gone through what I had gone through. Fear of embarrassment silenced me for far too long. 2017 was when I said no more. Although speaking in public is one of my least favorite things to do, I developed a superpower – if you will – that drives me every day to help others heal from or avoid staying in unhealthy environments all together. There is power in sharing stories!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I am the same Lisa in every room I enter. I could not always say that. In the past, I showed up as who I thought I was expected to be in those respected rooms. Over time, I learned that I was doing myself a disservice. A word of advice to the world, show up as your authentic self no matter what.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Actually, since becoming a mental health therapist in 2022, I skip to work every day in my head. What I do does not feel like work. Having clients tell me that in between sessions, they often think ‘Ms. Lisa is going to get me for doing x, y, z after advising me not to’; or that because of me they no longer react off of emotions, but they now take the time to feel what they feel and then react only if a reaction is even necessary.
