Story & Lesson Highlights with Tamalia Lock of Phoenix

Tamalia Lock shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Tamalia, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now, my days are full, as a Clinical Support Specialist supporting multiple senior living communities, helping run our family business, and taking care of my family as a wife and a mom. It’s a lot, but I’m called to it. I try to always stay focused on what matters: faith, family, and doing what’s right.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Nurse, an Assisted Living Manager in Arizona, and an Educator committed to building strong resident-centered communities. Currently, I support two local Residential Care Homes and as a Clinical Specialist I support senior communities with enhancing care quality, driving occupancy growth, and fostering a culture where staff feel valued and residents feel at home. I am the Co-Founder of Innovative School of Health Sciences, where I serve as the Board President and Faculty. I am passionate about leading with purpose and empathy to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that once overextended, over compensated, over committed just to prove that I am enough. The attempts to fit into someone else’s framework. Not to mention loose boundaries personally and professionally. This mindset took me so far, but limited my growth.
I understand now that I don’t need to have all of the answers. I am empowered to use my voice. I understand that my best will differ each day, because the circumstances I face are ever evolving. There were times that I didn’t receive an invitation to the “table” I learned to build it for myself and I have. I am confident in who I am as a person. This doesn’t mean I will always make the right decision, but I am accountable to myself.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to not rush growing up. I would tell her to go to medical school, travel more, learn a couple of languages. Don’t take life so seriously.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
This is a great question and if you asked me five years ago, it would be “No”.
To date, you will always see the same version of me. I am a mama bear everywhere I go. I am a person of faith and to be fully transparent enjoy the occasional margarita. I believe in servant leadership and hold myself accountable. I have a husband that supports all of my endeavors and I believe that he make it easy for me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Everything I do is a means to an end. My husband and I want to start a homestead as a legacy to our family. We would expedite the plan and spend as much time together as possible.
