We recently had the chance to connect with Sarah O’Mary Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Each morning I have my coffee while I watch TODAY and wait for my daughter to wake up. I use this time to review my unread emails, or catch up on small tasks that I didn’t get to the day before. Once I have my daughter off to school, it’s go time. I sit down and try to focus on projects ranked from super urgent, to “it can wait an extra day.” I try to get to everything, but it always seems like there are just not enough hours in the work day! Because of this, I typically spend around 2-3 hours after my daughter goes to bed working on the items that fell through the cracks while my husband and I binge our current shows! I love my job, and I get excited to finish up my projects, so I don’t mind at all!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Sarah O’Mary Roberts, and I own SarahOMaryDesigns. It’s a full service design business with a focus in small business branding and event design (i.e invitations, party supplies, etc.). Everything I create is made with my won original art and illustrations. I also sell my digital art, specially made for other stationers, on Etsy, and through an exclusive membership. I have been drawing, painting, and entrepreneur-ing since I can remember!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I’m not sure that it’s my earliest member of feeling powerful, but definitely the most profound….When I started taking my “side business” very seriously after hours from my 8-5 corporate job, I ran the numbers and realized I could actually take it full time. The empowerment of realizing I could actually make it was overwhelming!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Several! Being a small business owner, I feel like it’s a weekly struggle of “is it all worth it?” But once you start thinking that, inevitably, something wonderful happens that reminds me, YES!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My sister! She has the best ideas for new products, catchy phrases, themes, etc. When my creative juices are dry, I can always call her and say HELP!! She shows up with things I would’ve never thought of.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Taking the leap! Taking the time off to be with family, friends. Taking THE trip. Life is short, and I firmly believe in working really, really hard so that when it’s time to take a break and live life, there’s no guilt! We work to live, not live to work—even when we love our jobs!!
