Story & Lesson Highlights with Marie Richards of Austin, TX

We recently had the chance to connect with Marie Richards and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Marie, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I frequently encounter the misconception that engaging a travel advisor for your trip planning will inevitably lead to higher costs compared to booking directly or through large online retailers. I am delighted to share that in my 14 years of experience in the travel industry, I have consistently been able to match or even provide more favorable pricing than what you might find online.

My established and strong partnerships with various travel wholesalers and direct companies allow me to secure competitive rates for my clients. This means that not only do you receive my dedicated expertise, personalized service, and peace of mind, but you also benefit from pricing that stands up to, and often beats, what’s available elsewhere.

Considering the comprehensive support, valuable insights, time savings, excellent service, and exclusive perks that come with having a dedicated travel advisor, why wouldn’t you choose to work with someone who genuinely has your best interests at heart?

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello!
I am Marie Richards, owner and travel advisor of Rugged Luggage Travel. I’m excited to share a bit about my journey and what makes Rugged Luggage Travel unique.

My passion for travel began at a young age, exploring many U.S. states as a child. The travel bug truly took hold during my junior year of high school when I had the incredible opportunity to visit Europe. This early exposure to different cultures and landscapes ignited a lifelong love for discovering new places. I was fortunate to be recruited by another travel advisor to join their team after working with them for many years on my own trips. I’m incredibly grateful for that opportunity, as it allowed me to turn my passion into a fulfilling career.

At Rugged Luggage Travel, we’ve been proudly in business since 2013, specializing in creating custom travel solutions and itineraries for international destinations. We work with a diverse range of clients, whether it’s designing a romantic destination wedding, honeymoon, or babymoon for couples, crafting a personalized adventurous tour through Europe, or organizing multi-generational family and friend group trips. Our priority is to listen carefully to your desires and ensure every detail of your journey is meticulously planned and executed.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Traveling by yourself, especially as a female, can be quite scary. But my oh my, how freeing it is!

In December 2021, I embarked on my first solo trip to Iceland during the Christmas holiday, and it was truly magical.

Beyond the breathtaking scenery, diverse landscapes, and stunning waterfalls that Iceland is so well-known for, the most profound aspect of the journey was the personal growth I experienced.

Navigating an unfamiliar country on my own, especially during the quiet Christmas period, taught me that I am capable of achieving anything if I simply believe in myself and persevere.

This experience also showed me that I can effectively take care of myself regardless of the circumstances, and from that moment forward, a heartfelt sense of reassurance settled within me. It was a powerful realization that I carry with me to this day.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The past five years have been incredibly challenging for those of us in the hospitality industry. COVID-19 significantly impacted our businesses, leading to financial losses and changes in how we operate.
We’ve had to adapt constantly to new regulations and client needs, while also staying informed about global travel requirements.

There were certainly days when the difficulties felt overwhelming, making one want to give up.

Despite these difficulties, we continue to work diligently to provide excellent service to bring back the vibrant atmosphere that once defined our industry.
It requires constant effort and a positive attitude, as our ultimate goal is to ensure our clients feel comfortable, safe, and well-cared for.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I truly enjoy being authentic, honest, and fun in all my interactions so the answer is yes!

Most of the content I share publicly on social media focuses on my travel experiences. I love highlighting the beauty of different cultures and the world around us, and I aim to present these experiences in a way that reflects my true personality: raw, unedited, and a little silly.

I hope that genuine spirit comes across to everyone who follows along.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
This is a great question, and it really made me think! If I knew I only had 10 years left, the very first thing I would stop doing is worrying so much.

I spend too much time overthinking “what if” scenarios, questioning what I might have forgotten, or if I did something correctly. It’s a habit that consumes a lot of my mental energy, and I realize how much it detracts from being present and truly enjoying life.

I’m a very organized, loyal, educated, consistent, and reliable person, but I definitely second-guess myself way too much. This constant self-doubt can be exhausting and prevents me from fully appreciating my accomplishments and trusting my decisions.

I’m definitely working on it!
