We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lauren Deutsch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lauren below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Lauren with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up, I never shied away from a challenge. Whether it was sports, music, or academics, I was always up for pushing myself to new heights. My parents were always loving and supportive, and they encouraged me to learn as much as I could and work hard. Gymnastics was my first love, and I worked tirelessly to go from a beginner to level 8, even captaining my high school team. Then, I took on racquetball, despite being told I would never excel, and within a year, I made it to the Junior National Olympic Team as team captain. Time management was crucial to my success, as I balanced schoolwork, gymnastics, racquetball, and playing in the school orchestra. I even started my own business at age 7 with a friend, making and selling handmade crafts. Today, all of these experiences have led me to running my own music studio with ease, thanks to the hard work, dedication, and time management skills I developed early on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
With a passion for nurturing musical talent, I’ve dedicated over 20 years to running my private violin studio. The thrill of guiding students from their early years to adulthood has been the highlight of my teaching journey. But, last year I took on a new challenge – teaching music at Sierra Canyon School. Here, I’ve had the opportunity to ignite a love of music in young minds, and the results have been nothing short of phenomenal. In just three semesters, I’ve transformed the school’s string program from a handful of players to a thriving community of over 75 students! I’m eager to continue this exciting journey and inspire the next generation of musicians.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which skills or qualities would you focus on?
My love of learning has been the driving force behind my success in life. I relish the challenge of picking up new skills on my own, using observation to guide my approach. With patience and persistence, I’ve found that my learning journey often takes unexpected twists and turns, sometimes starting at a basic level before rocketing to new heights, or vice versa. My diverse interests in academics, sports, and music have also played a crucial role in shaping my worldview, providing me with multiple lenses through which to understand the world. To all young people, I would say this: Embrace the love of learning, keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid to chart your own course. The world is yours to explore and the possibilities are endless.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I’ve taken on a new and thrilling challenge: teaching violin to a large group of students at Sierra Canyon School. Building a string program from scratch, my goal is to provide a solid foundation and physical technique on the violin to all students. Despite the complexity of the instrument, I’m determined to conquer this challenge and make learning it accessible for all. I’ve created an innovative system that allows students to play real pieces of music from the start, building their skills and gaining confidence in their abilities. The results have been outstanding – after only four months, all students in third to sixth grade (approximately 240 total students) are playing basic violin with impressive skill. I’m eager to continue growing this program and igniting a love of music in the hearts of many.
