Amie Bennight of Historic Old Colorado City on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Amie Bennight. Check out our conversation below.

Amie, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
Time and time again, we are told by customers they “don’t like to shop”. It’s such an amazing opportunity to find someone that has come to shop but doesn’t necessarily like it. It’s as if they feel it’s necessary but uncomfortable. Our primary goal is to then change that experience into one they truly ENJOY. If we can change how they feel about shopping then we have succeeded I our fundamental mission – to help women find and feel GOOD about fashion. Shopping should be and MUST be enjoyable if we are asking them to come back, which of course we are.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As proprietors we manage two small and locally-owned boutiques, side by side on the historic west side of Old Colorado City in Colorado Springs. Boutique shopping offers a smaller and more desirable inventory than big box stores, catering to the local market with current trends and styles. Our “sister” boutiques work together to compliment each other by accommodating a variety of shapes, sizes and tastes. At one boutique you’ll find styles that are more laid-back, casual and funky while the other will offer more mature, tailored and fitting for a more sophisticated customer. Together we strive to offer the best selection of high quality and affordable clothing, accessories and gifts for women of all ages.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
We find commonality when we can express ourselves in our own unique way. Fashion is the ultimate form of self expression. Clothing and accessories people choose to wear reflect their identity, beliefs, emotions, and personality. It goes far beyond trends or what’s considered “in style”—it’s a personal statement, often communicating things that words can’t. Our mission has always been to help women find and feel good about fashion which ultimately, builds self confidence, identity and our everlasting bond with each other.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of failure and judgement is always prevalent. It’s the emotional response to the possibility of not meeting expectations—our own or others. We are always striving to turn the fear into motivation in all aspects: meeting or exceeding expectations in sales goals, customer service, product inventory and overall shopping experience.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The fashion industry, while ever-changing, tends to lean toward women of a certain shape, size or stage of life. We hear it every day from women that think they are ‘too old”, “too curvy”, etc.. We debunk these myths by arguing that fashion should be and can be accessible to EVERYONE – you simply have to find what makes you feel good.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
This is an easy one. We are absolutely doing what we were born to do. The journey here has been a roller coaster, falling in and out of career and industry choices over the years, financial and familial road blocks, great loss and amazing gifts. All the while, opportunity continued to present itself and while we had to make extremely hard decisions that we weren’t sure about, it all seems to be a for a reason. We realize our inherent desire is to help others and the avenue has become clear through our continued success in this industry. It’s so rewarding to help someone feel good or better about themselves. It’s absolutely what it’s all about!
