Carolina Mejías of Downtown on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Carolina Mejías and have shared our conversation below.

Carolina, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I sit down, and I start to write, without thinking what is gonna be exactly, when is just the flow going through me, the pen and the words, sometimes turns in to poetry, sometimes lyrics, sometimes just a phrase that I bring with me the rest of the day. Another moment that helps me lose track of time and find myself again is when I travel, to a new city or can be also to a city that I already being before, and immerse myself in the culture, get lost around the streets and find myself again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carolina, I’m from Spain (The Canary Islands), a magic place that if you’ve the chance to visit, I hope you do (is the paradise!). I’m a model, I do acting, and I love to write poetry/music and sing,
Being working as a model for 14 years, started in Canary Islands, and from there I being traveling/living around (Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Germany, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Miami), since I was very little around 7 years old, I started with dancing classes/theater in school and a music band, from there I knew that I wanted to do something like that, so I did it, I followed my dreams and I still do, is something that I’m grateful and happy i did because every experience is being so fulfilling and is being helping me grow in ways that I couldn’t imagine, also I have met incredible people along the way that after years and years they’re still there. Something that I’ve learned is to go for it, for your dreams, your passions, what makes your heart sings, and God/life will help you to reach what is meant for you, in magical ways. One foot in front of the other and go!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mum, she’s being a huge support all the time without exception from the beginning, she was who pushed me in to fly and have no fear about traveling and starting my modeling career, through the hardest moments that no one saw and through the most beautiful ones, even at a distance, she helped me with her energy, words and love, and that’s something that I bring always in my heart.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I realized that all the pain, can be turned into a good lesson, even a gift, for all the knowledge that you have after you heal and overcome whatever moment or hard time you’re living (that hard times aren’t forever, and is something I’m always present with in any hard moment) can help you in so many ways with future different situations and that all those lessons are gonna be helpful, you’ll be able to help your own self and help other people that maybe are going through as well, you can turn all that pain into art, into something so profound that (even if the art is in yourself/soul) that will be quite impossible to replicate because is your own story and your turned the pain into love.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I use to think that change our own self was hard or that we were always going to be the same, that was a thought when I was way younger, slowly with time and experiences, we’re constantly changing, we can become better (of course always if you want to!) we’re evolving in a fast pace, and now the change I think can happen even faster than before, and I think that’s a beautiful thing.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m close to the ocean, or touching grass, when I’m close to the people that I love the most and we’re laughing out loud! Also growing in an island, every time I spend time close to the beach is a full reset, a deep moment where I feel just floating in clouds, more alive, brings a lot of peace.
