Peter Ajello of Fort Lauderdale on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Peter Ajello and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Peter, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Over the course of my journey with Polish Concrete And Epoxy, being in business for over 16 years and battling through the pandemic And different obstacles, I managed to produce a movie, that is actually streaming live on Prime Video across the country, called “America’s Real Biggest Loser”

It documents my path of my life up into the current of family man and business owner. I have appeared on Oprah’s Lifeclass, The Doctors, and Dr. Oz, and this was unexpected but the icing on the top and a real treat.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Peter Ajello, I am the owner of Satin Finish Concrete, for the last 16 years. We specialize In Polish Concrete, Epoxy, Terrazzo, and many other scopes of work. I opened the account and executed the largest work ever done in the history of JcPennys as 75 Florida stores were completed with polish concrete. As the journey is still going, we have moved on to work through out the state of florida doing everything from large wharehouses, Airline Hangers, Firestations, Court Houses, specializing in schools and metallic epoxy in homes for the rich and famous along with all residents big or small including there garages.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
The person that taught me the most about business and work was the guy writing this….Lol, it was me, by making mistakes and errors throughout the 16 years, and learning from them everyday, documenting making adjustments and adapting to not have them happen ever again.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Satin Finish Concrete is a family owned business that i put in motion for all of my nephews and 3 brothers, along with all family members to fall back on if they ever wanted to, so there would always be a job and light at the end of the tunnel no matter what the circumstances were. There was a time my nephews Chris Ajello, and Frank Ajello being 30 years younger then me, truly listened and learned hands on training, starting from the bottom as I did, and working there way to the top 9 years later as some of the best epoxy installers and artist in the state of Florida. As they have grown, they have spread there wings a bit which is understandable at their age, as i constantly have to remind them as there uncle and godfather how I brought them into this business and taught them. The youngest James Ajello is currently in training in the summer and attending UCF, doing fantastic! So yes there was a time family truly listened and still do.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lies in the industry are the dream of it being so easy of installing floors and being a business owner and entrepreneur by taking a 3 day weekend class that sums up my life and accomplishments of 16 years in 3 days. Then guides you where to purchase equipment and materials you might not always need. The business part of it is just as important and properly marketing yourself with clients, not destroying the industry with half the price to get a customer because you have never installed a floor before or in business for 6 weeks. This happens a lot and being a business owner is not easy, and if someone tells you it is and you can learn how to be one in 3 days and with a certificate, it’s one of the biggest lies the industry can offer.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I hope people would tell about me when I’m gone is, this guy worked since he was 13 years old and made his way onto 4 national talk shows, 18 magazines, made a movie that streams live on prime video across the world, opened a family business, loves his wife Aimee and child haven, enjoys fishing, playing guitar, and knows how to put out a damn good floor.
