We’re looking forward to introducing you to Beckie Nelson. Check out our conversation below.
Beckie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of building that nobody sees is my ability to keep moving forward while living with anxiety. On the outside, people see me running a business, leading a team, and think, “she’s got it all figured out.” What they don’t see is the constant undercurrent of anxiety I’m managing every day — the second-guessing, the late-night spirals, the way I replay conversations a hundred times wondering if I said the wrong thing. Nobody sees how hard I work just to trust myself enough to make decisions, or how much energy it takes to push through the moments when my brain is screaming at me to shrink back. The fact that I can show up, keep building, and actually create something meaningful while carrying all of that — that’s the win I’m most proud of, even if it’s invisible from the outside.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Beckie, and I am the founder of Balanced Office Solutions, where we do Client Accounting Advisory Services which includes bookkeeping, business strategy and operational support for small business owners across the U.S. What makes us different is that we’re not just about reconciling numbers we’re about helping entrepreneurs actually understand their finances so they can make confident decisions. A lot of people think bookkeeping is boring or just a box to check, but I see it as a tool to take the stress and guesswork out of running a business. We don’t sugarcoat shit business is serious, numbers can make or break a company, and I wanted to be real with my clients instead of offering some polished, sugar-coated version of the truth.
My story started when I was laid off from a corporate job and realized I couldn’t go back into an office. I’ve struggled with anxiety my whole life, and that environment just wasn’t sustainable for me. Instead, I saw this huge gap in business owners that needed real financial support, but they didn’t always want or need to hire someone full-time. It started off with just me, but now I employ two amazing women who help me support our clients and keep everything running smoothly. What makes us special as a team is that we combine skill with empathy we’re thorough, honest, and real, and we care about helping our clients succeed without overcomplicating things. We meet clients where they are, whether they just need the basics handled or they’re ready to dive deeper. At the heart of it, my work is about making business finances feel less scary, more empowering, and a whole lot less anxiety-inducing while keeping it real, always.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I honestly believed I would never make it. I was severely bullied, and my parents weren’t really present, so I grew up thinking I wasn’t good enough and that the world was stacked against me. That belief followed me for a long time, quietly shaping how I approached life, relationships, and even my career.
Today, I don’t fully carry that belief anymore I know I’ve built a life and a business I’m proud of, and I’ve overcome so many obstacles along the way. But I won’t lie: some of those self-confidence issues still pop up. Anxiety and overthinking haven’t disappeared entirely. The difference now is that I recognize them, I work through them, and I don’t let them define my path anymore.
What I’ve learned is this: just because you believed you weren’t enough as a kid doesn’t mean you’re stuck there. I’m still here, still building, and still proving that little kid wrong every single day. It’s ongoing, messy, and real but it’s possible to rewrite the story, even if your inner critic never fully shuts up.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: You’re going to make it. You’re going to survive the bullying, the loneliness, the fear, and the doubt. You’re going to build a life you can be proud of even if it doesn’t feel possible right now. I know it’s hard to see past the pain, but every hard day is shaping the strength you’ll need to show up in the world on your own terms.
I’d tell her it’s okay to feel scared and anxious. It’s okay to think you’re not enough. But none of that is the truth it’s just f*cking noise. Even when your heart is racing and your mind won’t stop, you’re capable of more than you can ever imagine.
Most of all, I’d tell her to trust herself and her own path. Someday, she’ll look back and see that every fear, every tear, every anxious night was shaping the resilience and courage that would carry her farther than she ever imagined. She’s going to be brave, she’s going to be proud, and she’s going to keep showing up and along the way, she’ll find happiness, fulfillment, and a strength she never thought possible.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Right in this moment one of the biggest lies my industry tells itself is that AI is coming for our jobs. Sure, technology changes the way we work it always has. Accounting used to be done with handwritten general ledgers (yes, I’m aging myself). Industries evolve, but humans are more important than ever, especially when it comes to empathy, creative problem-solving, and actually thinking outside the box. Bookkeeping isn’t just about numbers; it’s about understanding the story behind them, helping business owners make smart decisions, and guiding them through the stress and overwhelm that no machine can replicate.
Another lie is that bookkeeping is simple. On the surface, it might look like just data entry or reconciling accounts, but the reality is it’s complex, strategic, and critical to a business’s survival. It takes years of experience to understand what is and isn’t deductible, how to reason through messy transactions, and how to catch errors that software alone can’t flag. Clients just add shit accounts, loans, transactions without context, and no AI is going to stop and ask, “Wait, why did you do this? How should this really be accounted for?” Accounting is not always black and white. Numbers are numbers, but how they’re presented is part art, part strategy, and requires judgment, insight, and experience. Mistakes or misinterpretations can cost businesses thousands or even derail growth.
At the end of the day, the lie is believing this work is easy, replaceable, or unimportant. It’s not. Bookkeeping is the backbone of a business, and anyone who treats it like a checkbox is setting themselves up to pay the price later down the line.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who genuinely gave a f*ck not just with words, but in how I showed up for them personally and professionally. Someone who genuinely listened, held space when it mattered (or didn’t), and helped people feel seen, heard, and supported, even in the messy, hard-ass moments of life. I want them to say I made a difference simply by being present, real, and fully invested in their well-being.
I hope they tell the story of a woman who faced her own fears and struggles, but still made time to lift others up. That I absolutely wasn’t perfect, but I was honest, compassionate, dependable, and someone who loved using the word f*ck to keep it real. I also hope they tell people that I was someone who helped people feel less alone, less overwhelmed, and more capable of tackling life and the challenges it throws at them.
And I hope they remember that above all, I f*cking cared about people, their stories, and the impact I could help them create in their lives and businesses.
