Story & Lesson Highlights with Twyla Grider of Union City

We recently had the chance to connect with Twyla Grider and have shared our conversation below.

Twyla, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently had my dad spend about 3 weeks with me and my son. There were a couple of days that I really needed to focus and work, and my 13 year old son stepped up and not only took care of my dad, who is a squirrelly 75 year old, but also cooked for us all while I continued to wrap up my day. My dad was happy to spend the time with my son, the meal that he cooked was both nutritious and delicious, and I was very proud.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Twyla Grider, a fashion designer and creative director with over 15 years of experience in contemporary womenswear. My newest venture, *Eve by Twilight*, is a contemporary brand at the forefront of the Healthy Materials movement. We create clothing exclusively from natural or plant-based materials—down to the thread—because we believe luxury should do no harm. The DNA of the brand is “Effortless, Sexy, Cool”, and our core values—“Luxury, Comfort, Craft, Do No Harm, and It Must Feel Good”—guide every decision we make. ‘Eve by Twilight’ is about redefining quiet luxury through clothing that not only looks refined but also honors the body and the planet.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My biggest influence has always been my mother. I was a very independent child, and while neither of my parents discouraged that, my mom leaned into it—encouraging self-thought and creativity. She recognized I was an artist before I even knew it myself. She would sketch beside me in church, hand me her sewing scraps to make clothes for my Barbies, and sit with me through every re-airing of Funny Face because she knew I was captivated by the fashion. She never pushed me, but she quietly nurtured my instincts. In her own way, she allowed me to discover that I was a designer—on my own terms.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes—more than once. In fact, I think about giving up at least once or twice a month. It usually happens when something I’ve been working toward doesn’t come together, when sales are slow, or when I’ve pushed myself through a sleepless night to meet a deadline. But I’ve come to see those moments as part of the creative process. They remind me how much I care about the work, and that persistence is often what separates a dream from a reality.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in fashion is that people need more clothes. The truth is, most of us need fewer pieces—but better ones: healthier, well-made, and well-fitting. Another is the idea that polyester is “okay” if it’s recycled. At the end of the day, polyester is plastic, and it’s toxic. And finally, the belief that people will always pay more for quality simply isn’t true. What people actually pay for is what they perceive as valuable—and value doesn’t always equal quality.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think customers would miss two pieces most: our “Boyfriend” Moto Jacket and Eve’s Robe. The Moto is effortless, sexy, and cool—just like its name suggests. It’s that jacket you borrowed after a date and never gave back, made in genuine leather that only gets better with age. Eve’s Robe is the softer side of the brand: sensual and luxurious, with draped fabric, hand-beading, embroidery, and printed cupro that feels as beautiful as it looks. Together, they capture the essence of Eve by Twilight: Effortless. Sexy. Cool.
