Story & Lesson Highlights with Dr. Juliet Dang of Seattle

We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Juliet Dang and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Dr. Juliet, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Who are you learning from right now?
As I continue my path through this world and become wiser, it is evident that you can do all the right things and have the most ethical and compassionate gestures, yet there are people who will have no qualms advocating for your downfall. Is it human nature to be cruel at times? Or, is it fate that is leading you away from toxic dynamics and onto something better? Since I am a cup half full kind of person, I believe it is the latter. Life has a way of directing you towards better and brighter things.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I published my first book this year. It began as a fertility journey that quickly branched out into discussing partnerships, friendships, family drama, and just life in general for a new parent. For women who choose to embark on the procreation chapter in their lives, it can be a rollercoaster ride for some. I wanted to shine a light into these experiences and share what I learned.
Besides writing, I also create art & fashion. I began painting back in 2016, which then evolved into ready-to-wear designs. In Sept. of 2024 I had my Asian New York Fashion Week debut.
I am the founder/editor-in-chief of Vietology Magazine and we published our first edition in Autumn 2021.
My “day career” is within medical affairs. I completed a PhD and Master’s in Oral Biology at U of Washington, Seattle.
Through my endeavors, my mission is to highlight and elevate the BIPOC community whenever I can.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
This was a moment that came to a surprise for me actually. My team and I were hosting the launch event for Vietology Magazine and one woman came up to me and said “do you feel your power? Because I do”. I was taken aback and didn’t really know what to say. I was surrounded by many amazing women within my community who came to support this achievement and I wish I had the chance to soak it in a little more. For me, it was the energy/time/passion that the whole team fed into this project, that the power emanated out to our community and beyond. Our voices and talents were being projected via this platform, which I feel did make an impact and inspired people.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The sudden loss of my mother back in 2014 was quite devastating. I thought she would live forever. I learned that grief is always somewhere in the back of your head. Sadness creeps up at any given moment. Big moments in life that can no longer be shared with her are bittersweet. My mother gave me everything so that I could persevere and attain any dream I have. I try to live a full, content, and purposeful life, which is my way of honouring hers.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Truth, honesty, justice, empathy, unconditional love, giving the benefit of the doubt to those you should actually know.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I do it all the time. I don’t reach for the stars because I think someone will tell me I did an awesome job. I do it because I have a vision and a goal. When I strive for excellence it is due to an innate energy from within. It’s also about being able to see the big picture in things like your job or various activities. Monetary rewards are fantastic but feeling a sense of purpose and accomplishment are great things too especially when you can create a benefit for others.
