Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Freeport Jackson of Atlanta, Ga

Freeport Jackson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Freeport , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The most common misconception that I think most people have about independent artist is that they think we are trying to get rich or become famous. Most people I have come into contact with, including myself is the fact that we have a passion for the art. We love the freedom that comes with being artistic because there are no right and wrong, you do exactly what your mind feels like doing. Of course people would love to make a living off of their craft but that’s not always the case. The reality is, you have to have a burning passion before you even decide to become a music artist because the money won’t always be there, but the love and drive will definitely open up opportunities and place you in rooms you can only dream of.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Freeport Jackson, I am from East Point, Ga and I have been making music for the past 17 years as well as audio engineering, songwriting, and producing for other artist. What makes my music special is that I don’t follow trends and I’m able to do what I love and people have really taken a liking to my style. I’ve also been collabing with a L.A artist Koala.b and we are working on his album which is a lot more lyrical than myself but the way he approaches music as a storyteller is what makes him so great and I am not only proud to be working with him but I’m also honored that I get the opportunity to do so.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I used to be very quiet, and tried to stay behind the scenes for fear of what people may think of me, but over the past few years I realized everyone has opinions and honestly a lot of those people’s opinions do not matter. I had to realize my worth and who I am and that allowed me to step out of the shadows and be me PROUDLY. Everyone isn’t going to like you or like what you’re doing but as long as you are authentic the right people will have no issues with you and will love you for you.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
That’s really how I got into making music. It seemed as if the only way people would hear or listen to me was when I played a song I recorded. The first time I played a song I rapped on the room was dead silent, people were stunned that was me. They then began to tell me how good they thought it was and that I should keep going. That right there fueled the fire and I haven’t stopped since. I realized my voice, my style and the way I carried myself sort of demanded people’s attention and it still does to this day.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you have to dress a certain way or act a certain way. That is totally false,in my opinion. When you’re in the creative field you are allowed to be yourself and still do what you love. Hip hop and Rap specifically makes artist feel as if when they get a certain age they can no longer do what they love and that’s also not true. It’s just the older you get the smarter you get and they can’t finesse you like they can a younger artist who hasn’t done their homework on the industry.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I lived my life my way and didn’t care what anyone thought. The fact I don’t worry about people’s judgement or what they think of me because at the end of the day this is my life, and I have to live for myself. Nobody will be able to answer for me when that time comes and I want to make sure I have little to no regrets. That’s why it’s always a good time to bet on yourself and step out on faith because you never know when the clock is going to stop.
