We’re looking forward to introducing you to Georgia Nubia. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Georgia, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Are you walking a path—or wandering?
For years, i had been wandering around on a path trying to figure things out but now i can say i am truly walking a path led by love and living out my dreams. i had no idea i would be where i am today but i am thankful i continued to push through everything and not quit on myself. Going from a full time entrepreneur to a full time teacher is the most fulfilling experience ever. Especially since I’m still doing what i love and now spreading it to the future leaders of our culture and community
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
my name is Georgia nubia, i am a poet, a photographer, a painter, an all around creative. i am also an entrepreneur turned educator who teaches children self expression through creative arts, social studies, science, and entrepreneurship. What’s very unique about my story of resilience and grit is, i took a leap of faith in 2016 to move away and become a poet. i had no idea so many people would believe in me and assist on this journey of becoming Georgia Nubia. Having the opportunity to now teach children is the most fulfilling experience because i know i am doing more than living my dreams, i am adding value to my culture and community by allowing the children a space to creatively learn and be themselves
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My pastor, Arthur Hubbard. My Godmother, Bertha Little, and many others from my longest friend Brittany Hadley to my mentor, Khalid (may he rest poetically) and even men i’ve attempted to date. I believe these people were sent to be the lights along my path because in my worst moments, they have given words of inspiration or encouragement to keep me going or to push me to another level. for a long time, i didn’t see what they saw… the beauty, the talents, the gifts, but with every change in life, there’s been someone there with a flashlight and a mirror…. to light the path for me while reminding me who i am. i am truly thankful for all of these people because they truly make my village and without them, none of this would be possible
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
you’re beautiful, the mole on your nose and the gap tooth smile is your signature, your beauty marks…. you’re different and your family knows it but they don’t know how to acknowledge it so when they say “you ain’t got what we got” it’s because they don’t have what you have and what you have is beauty, grit and grace, a smile that brightens the room, and an energy so pure, it’s infectious. No, you don’t have bow or straight legs but you have long legs like your daddy and those legs will carry you across any stages as long as you keep moving and never get stagnant.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
i’m committed to building a healthy black community with emotionally balanced, self expressing artists, lovers, sisters and brothers, i am committed to pushing art as a way of therapy and healing for anyone willing to try. i am also a huge advocate for talk therapy because its been a large part of my growth within the last 3 years. Adding talk therapy to my self care routine gave me additional balance, accountability, and also the correcting i needed without feeling super exposed or anxious with my friends. I have been able to heal my body and my mental health is in the best shape it’s ever been in. i suggest any person to give it a shot, a real consistent shot.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
i feel like i am doing what i was born to do because i got here through wandering on a path literally trying things and figuring it out as i go. i know if i didn’t take a chance on myself then i would definitely be doing what i would be told to do, work at a dead end job and just pay bills. It doesn’t feel like i am working at all and i enjoy my days at the school more than i do at home alone. one thing for sure, i definitely want my own family. i cannot wait to have a husband and child. i understand many people don’t value marriage anymore but i truly do want that one day…. so whatever legacy i leave behind… poetically, artistically, or even just she was a unicorn…. i want my family. ‘My children to be proud
