We recently had the chance to connect with Jehan “J” Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Jehan “J”, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently, through my new legal brand The Entertainment Esquire I have had the pleasure of contributing to major outlets including Fox, TMZ and Hot 97 my entertainment news breakdown on top stories from a legal perspective.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am entertainment lawyer, law professor and media professional. I have several TV and podcast shows that showcase my unique tie of entertainment with the law.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My father has shaped how I see myself the most. He always wanted to be a lawyer hence how my early childhood career dreams were shaped. He also was very helpful and kind to others and although he is no longer here, I still benefit from his kindness to others. I try to mirror this helpfulness and kindness in my own life. There’s no one in my life that does not benefit from my kindness. Lastly, I was a daddy’s girl as the baby girl and I was always put on pedestal. This treatment has allowed me to only expect the best in my personal and professional relationships because through my father I have already experienced the best.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me resilience and what it truly means to have faith. Faith truly is believing the evidence of things not seen. The last 5 years I have seen a lot of highs but I also have experience some of the worst things in my life during this time (including challenges to my legal career, death and injury of family members, loss of friends and businesses) but people only see the success and not my journey and valleys.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
An important truth very few people agree with me on is that persons make time for who they want to make time for.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop trying to please others so much and focus more on my own peace, needs and happiness. To help with life balance, I’m learning NO is a full sentence. There also only two type of persons in this world, givers and takers. For better or worse, I am a giver and so I have to be very careful who I give anything to.
