We recently had the chance to connect with Maurita Sutton-Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Maurita, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Awake! A quiet prayer rises to God for my gratitude and request for strength to ground the day. Slowly, I move toward the space where my awakening continues, “the bathroom” for a fresh wash, soft lounge wear, and a sense of ease. With intention, I open the 13 windows of my home, welcoming the morning light and allowing love, expectation, and grace to flow in. Coffee brews as the day begins, sometimes accompanied by soft jazz, Teddy Swims, or a Elevation worship song like my favorite: “I Trust in God”. I tend to my green plants, watering them if needed, then return to silence, my most treasured companion. Most mornings, I choose stillness: reading a devotional, whispering prayers for myself and for others. After that first sacred hour, I turn to my calendar, where planning the day’s rhythms. Some days it’s coffee with women in the city, a Chamber meet-up, an award ceremony for a sister-friend, or shopping for a client’s home, or simply a quiet walk around the lake with my husband (yes, he gets scheduled in too). “Slow Mornings” are my jam, my sanctuary, and the foundation of the life I choose to live with grace.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
With two unique businesses, Designs by M & Life Coach Maurita, I’ve created not just services but also a curated line of interior goods that embody rustic charm and refined beauty. It’s about more than a pretty room or a polished plan, it’s about helping women feel at home in their lives, their work, and their spaces. I bring my unique blend of talents, professionalism, and creativity to make sure every woman I work with feels empowered, supported, and inspired to design her life with intention. Simply Maurita (my brand) is an extension of who I am and the way I show up for women. I’ve always believed that our homes and our lifestyles are deeply connected, and through my work as both an Interior designer and an Life Coach, I get to bridge the two. Coaching allows me to help women find clarity, balance, and confidence in how they live and lead, while Design allows me to transform their spaces into reflections of that inner alignment.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memories of feeling powerful trace back to when I was just eight years old, learning to drive my stepfather’s MG convertible and leaping from the roof of our two-story home with my neighborhood friends for sheer joy. The ability to take those leaps and steer that car gave me an exhilarating sense of control and freedom, even at such a young age. As I grew, I pursued gymnastics, drawn to the strength and discipline it required, but I found an even deeper sense of fulfillment in cheerleading. The harmony of commanding my voice while moving my body with precision was electrifying, a profound reminder of the power that comes from mastering both expression and motion. Being heard is power!
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
As a child, whenever I felt sad or afraid, I would go to my mom and share openly how I felt. Afterwards, I would turn to my grandmother and do the same. Their responses: whether gentle or firm, taught me to listen, reflect, and find my own way of handling challenges with their guidance. Both of these remarkable women embodied strength in the world, and I witnessed it firsthand as they raised me into the woman I am today. From them, I learned the power of prayer and trust in God, lessons they instilled in me from childhood. My mom, now 76, and my grandmother, 96, are both full of wisdom and unwavering strength. “Fear not,” my grandmother would say, a phrase that has stayed with me throughout my life.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what matters most to me is my heart for serving and uplifting women and helping them shine in every part of life, from their homes to their careers. They’d say, I have a deep admiration for women who know themselves, believe in their worth, and embrace their power. Self-love isn’t just a practice for me, it’s a lifestyle, one I live daily with grace, joy, and intention. And yes, I adore the little (and big) pleasures of life: shopping sprees, traveling, steaming cups of coffee, popping champagne, and turning any event into a celebration. Life is meant to sparkle, and I intend to sparkle right along with it! They would also say they love my drive to support young women in college in the fields of Arts & Fine Arts with HER Scholarship Fund Inc.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
What I understand deeply, and what many people may not, is the profound connection between our inner world, our faith, and the life we create around us. Most people see success, happiness, or confidence as something external and something to achieve or obtain. But, I know that true transformation begins from within and through trusting God’s guidance. The thoughts we nurture, the love we give ourselves, and the intentionality we bring to our daily choices shape not only our mindset but our homes, our careers, and our relationships. I also understand that vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s a source of immense strength, and leaning into God’s wisdom can unlock clarity, purpose, and power that others often overlook.
