We’re looking forward to introducing you to Maggie Rodriguez. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Maggie, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A candle is not “just a candle!” Many people think candles are simple products, but in reality, creating a luxury or branded candle involves artistry and chemistry. Choosing high-quality wax, testing fragrance blends, balancing wick sizes, and ensuring safe, even burns is a meticulous process. Customers often don’t see the hours of testing behind each candle. They also assume candles should be inexpensive because they burn away. What they might not realize is that premium candles reflect investment in natural waxes, clean-burning wicks, custom vessels, small-batch pours, and designer-level fragrances. It’s more like selling a lifestyle or luxury experience than just wax in a jar. The same goes for all the products in the CLV Collection.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started my career as a teacher who left the classroom to focus on being a mom and, along the way, discovered a new passion in entrepreneurship. Out of my love for the ocean, the beach, and endless summer days, I created a brand inspired by all things coconut that brings the serenity of a coastal escape into everyday life. What began as a simple idea has evolved into a luxury spa-inspired collection of candles, body butters, sugar scrubs, room sprays, and reed diffusers—all crafted to evoke the tranquility and indulgence of a seaside retreat.
Each product is infused with the purity of coconut and thoughtfully designed to transform daily rituals into moments of self-care and relaxation. My goal is to create more than just products—I want to offer an experience that transports you to the calm of the shoreline, wrapped in sun, sand, and sea breeze. Bringing together fragrances and products that remind people of their happiest beach memories and inspires them to slow down, breathe, and savor the moment.
We are excited about what is coming next – 12 Days of Christmas Advent gift box, car diffusers and a much larger candle.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My father! He came to the United States from Cuba at just 17 years old; graduated from Miami High, went on to get to college at UF and graduated from UM. He had determination and the belief that hard work could create a better life. Watching him build a business from the ground up and working with him in the summer, I got to see first hand the true meaning of resilience, discipline, and perseverance.
From him, I learned that work isn’t just about earning a living—it’s about character, showing up with integrity, and giving your best no matter the circumstances. From watching him over the years, I have learned that the most important part of business is building relationships. He may be retired but I am blessed to have him as the CFO, and I get him wicking candles from time to time! His journey has always inspired me to pursue my goals with the same grit and gratitude.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held me back the most in my life is the fear of failure. Someone once taught me that “Fear is a Liar!” Once I really understood that, I realized taking risks or stepping outside of my comfort zone was the key to success.
I’ve learned that failure isn’t the end—it’s part of growth. Every setback has taught me something valuable, whether it was resilience, patience, or a new way to approach a challenge. I want my children to see that through me. I want them to understand that failing doesn’t make you weak—it makes you stronger, wiser, and more prepared for the next opportunity. By facing my fears and pushing forward, I hope to teach them by example that courage is more powerful than perfection.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes — what you see is what you get. The public version of me is the real me. I try to show up authentically in every part of my life, whether it’s in my work, with my family, or in my community. I’ve learned that people connect most when you’re genuine, and I don’t ever want to create a version of myself that feels staged or different from who I truly am.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
What I would regret most is not fully going after my dreams. I don’t ever want to look back and wonder “what if?”—what if I had taken the risk, pushed a little harder, or believed in myself more. I would regret not creating something meaningful that reflects who I am, and not showing my children that it’s possible to chase your dreams and build a life you love.
