We recently had the chance to connect with Jonathon Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathon, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m walking a path, but I’m no stranger to wandering. As a filmmaker, the road is full of uncertainty, from finding new clients to balancing my creative vision with their needs. There are moments of doubt where I question if the risk is worth it. But those moments are just part of the journey. I find my way back to the path every time because I know, deep down, that this is the only path for me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jonathon Davis, and I’m a filmmaker based in Detroit. I am currently in pre-production for my second feature film, “The Audition.” This film is a satirical psychological thriller that peels back the curtain on the brutal realities Black women face in the cutthroat film industry. To ensure we have the necessary resources to bring this story to the screen next year, we’ve launched a GoFundMe campaign.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Hands down, my parents. My work ethic is entirely thanks to them. My dad’s advice has always stuck with me: “No matter what you do in life, be the best at it.” So, even though filmmaking is a less traditional path, I’ve applied that mindset to every project.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. I almost gave up on “The Audition” entirely. We were set to film in 2023, and I felt like we had everything lined up—our cast, our locations, all of it. But as often happens, life had other plans. I went through some difficult personal issues that made me take a step back from the project. I still took on freelance gigs (shout-out to Bureau Detroit), but I disconnected from a lot of people in my life, including friends and family in the industry. I was on autopilot, just working to get by. I felt empty without “The Audition”. Now, looking back, I realize that some things are worth waiting for. I’m glad I took the time to heal and re-approach the project with a clearer vision.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to the belief that everything will always work out in the end. It’s a philosophy I apply to my work and my personal life. If something is meant to be, it’s meant to be. If not, I just have to be ready to move on and tackle whatever comes next. It’s about being prepared and trusting the process, no matter how long it takes.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I know people will have many different stories about me, but the one I hope they tell is that I was there for them. I want to be remembered as someone who was a listening ear when no one else was.
