We’re looking forward to introducing you to Carmem Gusmao. Check out our conversation below.
Carmem, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Woke up , have my coffee, meditate for 10 min , work out for one hour and start to paint or create something related to my art.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carmem Gusmão . I am an American artist born in Brazil . I am a full time fine artist and art instructor. I am doing art for 48 years, the last 6 years I been living in Michigan and teach a lot of people how to be more creative and how to relief stress using art as a powerful tool . I feel that the word needs to care more about mental help and I really can use my gift to help others in this matter. I did some great art shows in Detroit , Livonia and all over the world . But my goal is keeping doing art classes for all kind of public , I feel very good when I see that my artclass bring joy to someone life
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a very energetic child that believed that I could change the world , I was a dreamer and loved art since my first memories.i was very giving person with hard time to say no. I couldn’t change the world But today I understand that I contribute a lot . I learn that I can let someone take care of me without feeling weak . I Learn that sometimes to say no is saying yes for you ! I believe in my art but today I am very disappointed with the art world been managed by art galleries and powerful people that only use the artist for they own interest.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I realize that so many people , art fairs and galleries don’t invest in the artist . They charge you only to be showing in that space without to promote you or your art , there’s is a false statement that you are building you curriculum , but since they get money already they don’t care if your work sell or not. Many times I payed fee to show in big galleries., bringing my own costumers and didn’t get any clients from the gallery and the worse was to pay commission for the art that I sold to my clients and the gallery get the money without any effort ! I want to gave up when I see that almost the time that is no respect for the artist.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I am trying too , but of course every human being has some face that is not likely to be shown in public ! I like to spread love, positivity , success and charity but I reserve the right to show or express my fears and failures trough my art! The smart people will read it
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I just stoped already to care about other people thought about myself or my work ! They never was in my shoes they never felt what I felt . I think since I am 63 I walk more than half of my entire life . Now I want to walk without fear and I paint for myself and have this freedom to change subject. Style ,media . Now is really time to experiment what I coudnt before ! I feel free
