We recently had the chance to connect with Marisol Amezcua-Hernandez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marisol, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think one of the biggest misunderstandings about cake decorating is that people often see it as “just baking a cake.” In reality, it’s an art form that takes years of practice, patience, and skill. Behind every custom cake is hours of planning, baking, decorating, and problem solving. Many don’t see the early mornings, the late nights, or the sacrifices that come with running a cake business. It’s more than flour and sugar.. it’s creating edible memories for people’s most important life moments.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Marisol Amezcua, and I’m the owner and cake artist behind my custom cake business. My journey started unexpectedly at the age of 14 when I signed up for a cake decorating class by mistake—and I’ve been hooked ever since. What makes my brand special is that every cake is more than just dessert; it’s a story, a celebration, and a piece of edible art.
After years of rejection and teaching myself everything I know, I was able to walk away from my full-time job at the Wynn Hotel Resort and Casino and pursue my dream of being a full-time cake decorator at just 21 years old. Today, I create custom cakes for all types of special occasions, and I also share my story with younger generations to inspire them not to give up on their dreams.
Right now, I’m focused on continuing to grow my brand, connecting with my community, and showing people that cake decorating is more than cake/frosting! It’s a craft fueled by passion, dedication, and heart.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Chef Philip Dell is the sole reason I’m in the career I am today. He saw something in me before I saw it in myself. He pushed me to keep competing when I wanted to give up and even helped me land my very first job as a cake decorator. Before his encouragement, the idea of becoming a cake artist—let alone running my own business—had never even crossed my mind.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, many times! When I was first starting out, I worked at a grocery store and then a small bakery, but no one in the cake world wanted to take me in, teach me, or help me grow as a cake artist. I felt discouraged and lacked confidence, and there were moments I truly thought about giving up on my dream. But I realized that if I wanted to succeed, I had to push through, teach myself, and keep going—no matter how hard it got. That perseverance is what ultimately allowed me to build my own business and turn my passion into a career.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is the real me, though it’s a more refined version. I’m actually very shy, but in front of the camera is when I truly feel like myself. I love using my platform and my story to lift others up and inspire them, and I strive to be personable with my audience to share my authenticity as much as possible.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story told about me is one of perseverance, passion, and the power of following your dreams. I want people to remember that I didn’t give up, even when doors were closed or the path felt impossible. I hope my journey inspires others to believe in themselves, work hard, and lift others up along the way—because to me, success isn’t just about what you achieve, but the impact you leave on the people around you.
