An Inspired Chat with Sonia Machado-Hines

We recently had the chance to connect with Sonia Machado-Hines and have shared our conversation below.

Sonia, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Get up and do light therapy and workout and work through the day of things to get done.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sonia Machado-Hines. I’m a self made filmmaker. I tell stories that I want to tell, stories that I feel are worth telling, that motivate me to tell and that I do not have to ask for permission to tell. These are stories of empowerment for individuals and a lot of them for women.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
When I met my partner – Terence Bernie Hines, my husband, my soulmate I knew we would change both of our futures. We met and 7 days later we were married. He is an actor, a filmmaker, a writer, a director and a beacon in our lives. Together we guide each other and alone we aren’t quite so fruitful.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I miss my father. He died when I was pregnant with my 2nd son. It was a sudden and unexpected death and I discovered things about him that I didn’t know and didn’t realize I didn’t like knowing. It took a very long time to process that loss, the tears and the missing parent. Often I wish I’d done more to know so I could’ve something to have helped him avoid the outcome he experienced. I do enjoy some of the silly memories from my childhood and they do succor the sadness of the loss at times.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
That I speak my truth and I hold true to that. I also don’t follow along just cuz. Sorry, not sorry. And I do have a clan of ‘what would Sonia do?’ But I’d prefer it be of ‘what would you do?’ from the viewpoint of integrity and the truest form of what is true for you is what you do…just keeping things real.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m on a warm beach checking out where the sky meets the ocean. I have big plans…getting a lil’ place on the Spanish riviera where you can climb a few rocks and jump and swim in the water and repeat all the while during the breaks checking out where the sky meets the ocean…what a life!
