We recently had the chance to connect with Luana Sandoval and have shared our conversation below.
Luana, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
What brings me joy is when I see people smiling when I sing.
I regularly perform at Balcon Salon in Hells Kitchen in the talent shows Sing for your Life with drag queen Shequida Hall and Unhinged Talent with Svetlana Stoli.
One night, I performed Part of that world fully dressed as the little mermaid. A woman who works as a flight attendant came to me in tears saying that my voice sounded so angelic and that her friend who passed away was obsessed with Ariel and would have loved my show.
That really touched me and I hugged her while she was crying and thanking me for bringing the memory back.
Music is so universal and connects people from all backgrounds and states in life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn NY.
I currently work on my third studio record. It is inspired by my narcissistic relationship and I wrote the songs during the relationship and throughout my healing journey.
On June 1st I released my song and music video/short film Pictures Fade Away, a homage of narcissistic awareness day.
This video is nominated for a Wavy Music Award and I will perform it at the award show.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My past romantic relationship with my narcissistic ex has shaped me and my life perspective.
Through this experience I have learned to establish healthy boundaries and step away from people who disrespect me and don’t reciprocate the same energy and effort.
Now I see myself as a worthy person who has limited time and energy.
I became very wise who to let into my life and invest time and energy with.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain four months after the breakup with my ex by speaking out against her abusive behavior.
It was important to me to hold her accountable and it helped me to stop blaming myself.
I used my pain to write songs about this toxic relationship. Furthermore I met other women who have been through domestic violence. We shared our stories
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire Ariel, the little mermaid. She is determined and ready to leave her old life behind.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m proud to say that I’m doing what I was born to do which is singing and songwriting.
Luckily I had the chance to leave my small village lifestyle in Germany behind and move to the Big Apple.
I have worked with award winning music producers and even wrote a song with Madonna’s former percussionist Miroca Paris.
Furthermore I was a contestant on American Idol season 19. Currently I’m teaching songwriting at the Sound Collective NYC.
