We’re looking forward to introducing you to Devon Goodwin. Check out our conversation below.
Devon, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My crochet business, “Devon’s Craft Corner”. I get to create works of art and bring people joy, as well as use it as self-care for myself. It’s the best of both worlds!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Devon Goodwin. I am the CEO of Devon’s Craft Corner, a small crochet business with the aim to turn grief into art.
This business is founded on the memory of Justin Reid, my best friend, who died by suicide on September 19, 2023. I use this business to bring joy to others through crochet and provide self-care for myself, alongside educating others about the importance of suicide prevention and mental health.
I, myself, am a suicide attempt survivor so mental health is very important to me.
I am currently working on newborn-sized beanies to donate to a local business near my hometown so they are able to provide hats for families who have welcomed their babies into the world.
I try to donate as much as possible, which are usually beanies year round and plushies around Christmas time.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
In my opinion, what breaks the bonds between people is lack of communication. People tend to drift apart when things aren’t being communicated like they should be.
That being said, what restores them is growth and time. Growing as a person can change things a great deal.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell her the truth: you are going to face a lot of painful and hard times as you grow up. However, this will make you strong and you’ll be able to use your hard times to help others grow.
So don’t give up.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
My public persona is a version of the real me, but amplified. In public, I am more talkative and approachable, as I try to be in order to help others.
The “real” me most people don’t see, aside from family and close friends, is the introverted me. I’m more quiet by nature and prefer to be on my own.
Of course, my family and friends would disagree because they get the talkative version of me, but that’s only because I’m comfortable with them.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people are telling others that I did everything I could to help other people and their mental health.
I hope they also tell them about the crochet creations I created for everyone and how they were one of a kind.
