We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mo Barrett. Check out our conversation below.
Mo, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Spreadsheets (I know) and/or video editing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a retired Air Force Colonel turned Catalytic Comedian. I use humor to change the way people laugh, learn and think. My brand is about connection. Connection with yourself. Connection with others. Connection with what it is you’re put on this planet to do.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
My desire for extrinsic motivation. My entire military career, I wanted to reach the rank of general. I was so focused on that, for the prestige and pride of saying “I’m a general” which is all the wrong reasons. I’m releasing that and accepting the fact that we all can do good in the world, regardless of our station, rank, duty title etc.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The ability to have your pity party (not for too long), get up, brush yourself off, go back to the drawing board and figure out how the “next time(s)” will be different.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Loving others well. That’s also the legacy I want to leave behind … that I loved people well. People could be a stranger on the street who needs help, it could be my family, it could be someone needing a ride to the airport, it can be an audience who needs some reprieve from the stress of normal life.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think a lot of people think I’m just a clown … I am, but I’m not only a clown. I work really hard and I don’t know that most people realize that.
