Christina Roberts of Pawleys Island on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Christina Roberts. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Christina, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity, by far is the most important characteristic a human being can possess. Starting your day with a good sense of who you are and what kind of a person you want to be makes all the difference in how you work and maintain relationships with friends, family, and clients. With a good sense of integrity, you are setting a higher standard for yourself and it will affect every facet of your life in a positive way that will benefit you in the long run.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Christina Roberts, the woman behind Stuck In The Mud Ceramics and Pyrography, in Pawleys island, SC. I am a self taught artist, specializing in one-of-a-kind ceramic art and wood-burnings. I have a home studio where I create and fire my own pottery pieces. I have also developed through the years a process of woodburning where I incorporate a process known as.Litchtenburg wood burning that uses electric currrent to burn deep viens in the wood. I then study the burn patterns and lit the design inspire me to create what I see in the grain of the wood. I use layers of pigments and stains and a torch to create something very special. This particular process has taken me over seven years to get to the point where I am now. It is always very rewarding to see what these particular pieces become. The final product is always something. I am very proud of.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother and father, of course. However, my mother, in particular, has always been my biggest fan and has always encouraged me to create and express myself through my art. At around the age of seven, she had gifted me a large art set and from that moment on, I had a very strong desire to create. Even through college and several meaningful careers, my mother always told me she knew that my direction in life would always lead me back to a place where I found comfort and fulfillment with my artistic talents.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I realized that a very young age that through the challenges in life, you must not let self doubt getting in the way of pursuing the things that make you feel fulfilled. Whatever that may be, you have to have confidence in yourself and take chances and risks to advance and find new opportunities in life. We all have trials and errors in our lifetimes that only strength, confidence, and integrity will take you to a higher level. Pushing through hard times, I have found personally, is the most important thing that has led me to find successes and all I have done professionally and personally.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I do not hide the person that I truly am. I am not afraid to voice my opinion nor to be open about my struggles. I pride myself on making connections with people and truly listening to what they have to say. I feel like that is one thing About my work that resonates with my clients. These connections always come through when I am making a special piece or a custom order or just trying to create something one of a kind and that has an impact on their lives personally. My legacy, I would hope, would be that I was a creative and open minded human that listens as much as I talk. I truly care about people and I hope that comes through in all of my interactions and work.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I would most certainly regret not always trying my best. We always have days where we don’t feel like we are giving 150%. I feel like the more effort you give to your life or your craft, it will always come back to you. You have to have confidence in your ideas and put them to work otherwise you were cheating yourself from opportunities where you can truly succeed. Sometimes that’s where we find superpowers we did not know we had.
