We recently had the chance to connect with Marcee Musgrove and have shared our conversation below.
Marcee, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
This represents the fiber pieces I am currently concentrating on, in the beginning I cut and made designs that I really liked out then proceeded to mount them on the wood only to find out it was off. I would say the first 3-4
pieces I was pushing to complete them because I was eager to figure out/get a sort of feel for how I was going to express the piece, I think you will have guessed that I had to dismantle pieces to rethink what it would actually look like on the wood frames rather than what it looked like in my own eager mind. Yes, I have slowed the process down.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an Abstract mark making artist for the past 15 years. I am encouraged by Kandinsky for his marks and stories, Chagall for his story telling in the round and of course his stain glass and Monet for his wide sweeping landscapes with what I refer to as swirling winds and beautiful gardens. I am going to be writing mostly about Fiber art this time as I am concentrating on what I refer to as sticks and paper. A lot of it is from childhood memories, while I am typing this I realize I have actually started telling my own stories! I harvest wood from my own back yard, neighbors road side tree trimmings and turn them into objects representative of Camping, Canoes, Ladders, etc that represent the primitive camping family weekends with fish caught in the lakes for dinner on the wood fire. I use art tissue that I design with acrylics as well as purchased papers for the decorations leaving the structure very apparent. The structures are primitive and the paper is what welcomes you in.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I am not sure I can say what has served its purpose yet but that said, I know my idea of creating is changing rapidly and I am just following along to see where it all goes. There is something in this idea as I am so laugh a lot while working on these pieces. I do not have good fine motor skills in my hands so I have to constantly talk to my hands saying things like you can do it! It must be working because I am really cutting down on the knot tying redo’s.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I remember in the first 5 years I would as constantly either hitting a sweat spot or just finishing something I was unsure about. I think taking all the classes with amazing artists through Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh while it lasted . Then I have 3 female mentors I paid to help me understand certain parts of myself so I could find my own expression, We all need time to develop in anything we strive for so do not think because you did not do great the first 50-200 times you are done. if it is something that drives you and brings you satisfaction however you interpret that feeling, stay with it and get help.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I have pieces in a gallery called Tryon Scultpers and Painters, the management is astounding. they are mostly retired business people and love art. they are happy to see you, they are super encouraging and because of this it has a large number of active artists of all kinds of art and I look forward to going for every occasion. We need to be encouraging and what a blessing to be encouraged by others too.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I have been many things to many people having moved 27 times in my life. I hope they remember I was funny, as kind and generous as they needed and how much I appreciated them in my life. I am not big on the word legacy, I think legacies are made by the ones who were there to watch you do great things that they will talk about and mimic for years to come, I have no say in what that story will be.
