We recently had the chance to connect with Joe Bauer and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Wake up without an alarm – I’m pretty sure our bodies aren’t supposed to be jolted awake on a regular bases if we want to be healthy.
Drink 32 ounces of water – Gotta get hydrated. I don’t usually drink water when I’m sleeping ;-).
Prepare some Colombian coffee – We just can’t find anything as good in the States.
Work for 1-2 hours while the caffeine is firing off! This is my most productive time (by far)!
Cook breakfast – This is always eggs cooked in butter or olive oil, mixed into fresh greens with a side of oatmeal, that is actually far more berries than oatmeal, topped with a banana and farm fresh milk.
A functional workout comes about 2 hours later. Cheers!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Emily and I have been living in our sprinter van for over 7 years, traveling the world (the US and Canada in the van) looking for the best mountain bike trails, and even chasing powder from time to time.
We can do this thanks to the Starlink satellite internet and having amazing work that pays the bills and buys us new bikes from time to time.
Emily works for Trupanion Pet Insurance, which has been an AMAZING company to work for over the years, and supported our lifestyle from day 1.
I try to create exciting YouTube videos about our travel and mountain biking adventures that have taken us from the US/Canada, south to Chile, and as far east as Italy and Portugal.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up believing that we had to decide what we wanted to do based on what everyone else was doing. Then sometime in my 30’s I realized there were people making huge amounts of money, doing what they loved, and doing it without killing themselves by working so much. CRAZY, right?
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I don’t believe in giving up. In fact, most of the time I pursue goals far longer than I should before pivoting, or looking for a mentor/coach to show me what I’m missing. Now days I make sure that I really want what I’m working on by doing it a lot, then hire a coach (or a few coaches) to show me the way.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yep. Sometimes to a fault. If I can’t make it being myself, I don’t want to make it.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Nothing! My life is designed to be exactly what I want it to be. My only wish is that I had so much energy that I didn’t have to rest.
