An Inspired Chat with Scout Durwood of I am a nomad.

We recently had the chance to connect with Scout Durwood and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Scout, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Right now I am at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a solo show, so my days look like: wake up whenever the fatigue coma wears off, usually between eleven and noon. Make tea, do admin, read LONG DIVISION by Kiese Laymon (my brain starts slowly in the mornings, so I like to ease into my day), meditate, some combination of creative work or going to see other people’s shows. I get to the theater around 8pm to do my show at 9:20. Then I meet my friend Meredith who is here with another show that is nearby and at a similar time. We like to stare into the abyss/grab a couple of drinks or see more shows to come down from the day. Go home, wash off the glitter (mostly) repeat… it’s exhausting, but I love it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve gotten worse at answering simple questions as time goes by. I believe my job is “words.” Sing, write, or speak words, and generally speaking–though honestly less and less–those words are “funny.” I started my career in queer nightlife and burlesque in NYC, moved on to (mostly musical) stand up and scripted comedy in LA, made a digital series, made a movie, survived a pandemic, joined a circus… continue to write stuff in various categories and continue to sing in other categories.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
The feeling of being an individual breaks them, and the knowledge that all of us are part of a greater whole restores them. No part of the universe is complete without all the other parts of the universe. Trying to be better or more than is Sisyphus and also an accurate description of life’s work.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Croissants. I have celiac disease, and I desperately miss savory pastries of all kinds. That said, it’s also a nice way to really value the times a yummy fluffy snack comes my way because it’s so lovely and rare.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That success is real.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
Literal immortality would be a hell our brains can’t even comprehend.
