An Inspired Chat with Tamara Grantham of Shadow Rock

Tamara Grantham shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Tamara, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Summer break has ended, and I’m getting back into my writing routine. I’ve learned to take time to exercise before I start writing. This helps me wake up and gets my creative juices flowing. My goal is to write 1,000 words every day, and I’m happy to report that most days I’m able to accomplish it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Tamara Grantham, and I write fantasy and a little bit of sci-fi for middle grade through adult readers. I’ve written 30+ novels, and I’m currently writing a romantasy that features dragon riders battling magic users. I’m also writing the fifth book of my Harleigh Sinclair series, which is set in San Antonio, and is pitched as a female Indiana Jones with magic. My previous books are all fun, enjoyable reads appropriate for a wide audience.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I believed that authors were untouchable, and they weren’t people like me. I’ve come to learn that all that separates a successful author from a struggling author is persistence. If we give up, we’re doomed to fail. Even common people from small Texas towns can become authors.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
So many times! I sometimes wonder if all authors have gone through as many pitfalls as I have. To be honest, most of us avoid telling all the negative things–I know I do. I’m so thankful I never gave up. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I had let one of those pitfalls keep me down.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Faith and family. I’m passionately committed to both, and I wouldn’t be where I am now if it weren’t for them.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What false labels are you still carrying?
My false label is the belief that I’m not important. I’m a mom first, author second. Both jobs don’t have rewards until way down the line. Sometimes it’s hard to see that you’re making a difference, but when those little compliments come, when you get a good review, when your kids make the honor roll or get accepted into college, you can look back and see it was all worth it.
