MELISSA MISODA shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
MELISSA, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Watching my son play hockey! I was never much into sports growing up, but kids sure do change everything! There is nothing better than seeing your child’s smile when they are doing something they love!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been blowing glass for just over 30 years. Glassblowing found me at a time when I felt completely lost in life. During my third year of college, I had no passion for what I was studying and was ready to give up on pursuing any educational path. On a whim, I signed up for a glassblowing class, not really knowing what it involved. From the very first session, I was completely hooked by the material. For the first time in years, I felt a spark of excitement and hope for my future.
I went on to earn a BFA from Tyler School of Art and an MFA from Alfred University. I’ve since been fortunate to spend the past 25 years teaching glassblowing to high school students in Bellevue, WA, while also running a private glassblowing studio with my husband. There, I continue to create my own work and share my passion for this incredible art form.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
I’d have to say my parents. Both were school teachers, and it was my mom who encouraged me to pursue a teaching degree. I never imagined myself becoming a teacher while growing up, but I think as children we often absorb lessons without even realizing what we’re learning.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
yes, mentioned in my first answer – I was about to give up on education before I found glass. Nothing really sparked my interest before that.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I’ll answer 2 questions:
What do you believe is true but cannot prove? That life exists outside of our planet/universe.
Who do I admire for their character and not their power – My kids! They are so amazing and resilient and strong.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light I’ve been dimming is the dream of becoming a full-time artist. I hope that one day I’ll be able to support myself solely through my art. At the same time, I truly value making a living by sharing this craft with my students—it’s a joy that balances the dream.
