Darla Bostick shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Darla, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
At this point in my life I would say I am wandering. I have reached the initial goals I set before college. My career as a public art teacher was rewarding but was (per our plan) replaced by being an at-home Mom. Rarely do we today see families have the luxury of an “at home” parent. As my children were growing up I wore many hats–Scout leader, high school booster president, softball coach, active role at church, Master Gardeners and so much more. After the “kids” graduated and struck out for their own life decisions I was finally able to return to my personal love–art. So, I wander. I have time to visit museums, travel, participate in art associations…and create!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an artist. Each year I have 3 New Year’s Resolutions, with one being “Create something every week!.” I used to plan trips for friends, but they weren’t interested in going to museums, public art and more so I finally had the idea to plan trips for friends who are artists. We look at life through a different lens. I continue to teach, but on a more personal, fun level. Each year I lead two art workshop/retreats. One is my Art Adventure Abroad where we venture to another country and create an art travel journal. The other workshop/retreat is a week in the high desert of New Mexico where we stay at a Ranch and immerse ourselves in total “me.” We
leave home to pursue our love of art (even if only for a week). My Ghost Ranch, New Mexico art workshop puts us in touch with that creative spirit. Ghost Ranch is a retreat area with a rustic atmosphere. This art event is a unique experience of fun and exploration–stretching the possibilities of our art work and setting out in new directions. Unlike other workshops, this one is simply pure artistic pleasure—gorgeous southwest scenery, learning, sharing, creating, and more! Learn how to capture the spirit of a place and translate that into totally original pieces of art!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I still believe in myself and my talent and my ability to make a difference. It’s sad to think someone would give up a belief of themself. There is a quote from Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh that I have taken as my mantra: “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think!”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
To have a friend you have to be a friend.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I enjoy nature. When, at the end of day, I can sit and enjoy butterflies flitting among the blooms, birds gathering on the birdfeeders. the dew drops on the leaves and blossoms, a quiet-ness it calms my spirit. Time seems to stop when I observe. The importance of viewing God’s masterpiece in nature is always simply amazing.
