Steven Puri of U.S.A. on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Steven Puri. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Steven, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Mon-Fri it’s cardio + start of my focus time (I’m always clearer in the mornings when it’s quiet).

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
For everyone who gets distracted at work, procrastinates or feels overwhelmed, we created The Sukha Company -> a focus app that blocks phone and website distractions, helps organize your days and plays beautiful focus music while you work.

In short: we help you get into a Flow State so you can knock out your work much much faster…and have time for the other important things in life.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My first job in Hollywood was at a company that made trailers for movies. The principal of the company was brilliant at balancing creativity and business acumen, and in demand from every motion picture studio to help promote their next movies. He took me under his wing and I learned volumes watching him at the studios.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve run 3 tech companies – my first was a successful exit at a 6x multiple to our investors – it was a computer graphics company that did the visual effects for Independence Day, among others. My second start-up failed and I went into a deep depression since I was not prepared for that outcome – I thought I was smarter and luckier than I was.

I wasn’t sure how to move forward.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I realized a while ago that it’s too exhausting to keep up two different versions of one’s self.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
They will think that the movies I worked on defined me. I was more interested in the process of working with great creative minds.
