We’re looking forward to introducing you to Marie Carter. Check out our conversation below.
Marie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think a lot of us are secretly struggling with identity, but the way our society is set up it is definitely not comfortable to admit that. People have gotten so used to adapting to the norm and following trends that they believe it’s their identity. Some people adopt identities that have been shown to be accepted so they have less chance of being rejected. I believe if we all were really true to our identity, there would not be any more trends and we would have so many more meaningful contributions to our world. Creatives got the right idea.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Marie Carter and I own classic. a streetwear brand dedicated to the idea that we are bigger than trends. classic.’s designs are unique and aim to preserve hip-hop and black culture like art in a museum. The Classic Shoppe is based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has been in operation online for nine years. The brand has recently expanded and is now available inside The Village at The Ponce City Market in Atlanta and looking to gain residency in more stores very soon.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world, told me who I had to be, I was carefree. As a brand owner, it’s very hard to separate caring what people think about your brand versus caring what people think about you. I come from a small city where your support system depends on your popularity so I would not be honest if I didn’t say I have felt a kind of way when I haven’t gotten the love I would hope to receive for my hometown. But the love and support I have gotten other places where they didn’t have to know me to rock with my designs, has strengthened my spirit so much to the point that I feel closer to being carefree again.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been plenty of times where I have contemplated giving up, but that’s how I know that this is my mission because I haven’t been able to.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A Cultural value I protect at all costs is community. I feel like our culture has lost a sense of community over the years and it is hurting us so much. I feel like community is family, and although they may get on your nerves sometimes you love them and are always going to keep their best interest in mind.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Not getting a PPP loan when they were handing them out like candy. Just kidding government.
