Samantha Russell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Samantha, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Emails on emails on emails! My life lately has been completely taken over by planning and admin for my hair and makeup agency — on top of my work as an actor.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a professional actor and the co-founder and director of Last Looks Beauty, an inclusive Afro hair and makeup agency serving film, TV, and stage productions across the UK. Originally from Ohio, I’m now based in London, where I’m passionate about championing representation both on screen and behind the scenes.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember singing a solo in the Mickey Mouse Club during my elementary school play, and my mom was so proud. That night, she—raising me on her own—treated me to McDonald’s chicken nuggets as a reward. It was a small gesture, but a big deal for us. That’s when I started thinking, “I could get used to this.” That moment made me feel seen and encouraged. It told me I was on the right path—and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Stop worrying about what others might be thinking—trust me, they’re the main character in their world and are far too busy thinking about themselves.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The idea that you have to suffer for your art or constantly jump through hoops to prove yourself is something I’m actively unlearning. I still catch myself thinking it’s okay to work for pennies—despite knowing I’ve long outgrown that stage in my career. It’s not okay.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Stressing. lol
