We recently had the chance to connect with Jenny Eggers and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that photography is just about clicking a button and delivering some digital files. That might be true for A LOT of photographers, but not for me. My portrait work is a high-touch, guided experience from start to finish. I’m not just taking pictures – I’m creating something tangible that my clients can enjoy every day in their homes or use to elevate their professional presence.
With portraits, I help families tell their story through artwork that will last for generations. That means consultations, wardrobe guidance, thoughtful posing, refined lighting, and in many cases, custom framing and installation. With headshots, the process is more streamlined, but the attention to detail is the same – I guide clients so they look confident, approachable, and at their best.
Another misunderstanding is that a beautiful portrait “just happens.” The truth is, the magic comes from planning, my expertise, and an understanding/ gift of how to bring out the best in each person. My clients aren’t left to figure it out alone. I’m with them every step of the way.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jenny Eggers, a portrait photographer based in Downtown Ocala, Florida, and I run a boutique studio that focuses on two things: helping people look their absolute best in headshots, and creating portraits that become treasured family heirlooms. I’m known for guiding clients through the process so they never feel awkward in front of the camera – and for delivering finished artwork they’re proud to hang in their homes.
Before photography, I spent years performing on Broadway, which is where I learned about presence, expression, and how to connect with an audience. Now I use those same skills to help my clients feel at ease and truly seen.
In addition to my regular work, I have a couple of creative projects I’m really excited about: Whispered Moments, an exclusive, invitation-only portrait series of timeless, introspective images of children, and a personal project inspired by songs I love – each one turned into a fully realized portrait concept. Both are still in the works, and I can’t wait to share them when the time is right.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
In high school, I remember having one of those classic teenage know-it-all moments – though not in an arrogant way. I was talking with my parents and said, very matter-of-factly, ‘I can be anything I want to be.’ And I completely believed it. That belief felt powerful – like the whole world was open to me.
Today, I still believe that, but the power has evolved. Now it’s not just about believing I can do anything – it’s knowing I have the choice not to do EVERYTHING. That clarity, knowing where to put my time, energy, and heart, feels even more powerful than that teenage certainty.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You don’t have to have it all figured out right now. Your path won’t be a straight line. That’s the beauty of it! You’ll go from Broadway to working as a cashier at Home Depot to becoming a mom – each chapter teaching you something you’ll carry forward. One day, all of it – the stage presence, the customer service skills, the patience of motherhood – will come together in ways you can’t yet imagine to build a photography business you love! Trust yourself, stay curious, and know that every twist in the road is leading somewhere worth going.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the photography industry is that the value is just in the pictures. The real worth is in the experience – how clients feel during the process and how they’ll feel every time they see that final image displayed in their home. The truth is, most clients don’t know what they don’t know when it comes to digital files versus artwork. They often haven’t seen what’s possible when you display a portrait as a finished piece, and they don’t yet realize the emotion it brings to look at it every day. Once they experience that, it changes everything.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Funny enough, my last job on Broadway literally had me tap dancing to work! These days, I’m not wearing tap shoes, but I do get that same kind of excited energy – especially when I’m working on a creative project that’s fully mine. Both of my artist projects give me that feeling by letting me blend artistry, storytelling, and connection in a way that lights me up. It’s that mix of creative challenge and personal meaning that makes me want to run, not walk, into the studio.
