Nehemiah Muhiri Sr shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Nehemiah, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What battle are you avoiding?
Currently am avoiding Boston summer traffic at all costs. its tough, but sometimes i match through it when it is completely necessary
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nehemiah M. Mahulo Sr. I am first and foremost a Christian, but I am also an active member of the creative arts community. I primarily engage in music composition, production, performance, and education. I would say what makes my sound unique is that it’s a combination of solid theology, jazz, and blues rock. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and spent a chunk of my life in Kenya till I came to Berklee College of Music and then later on UMass Boston for Psychology. Currently am working on a gospel EP in the Indie Jazz collection. The tracks are very personal to me as they are real experiences and prayers I have.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I feel like, just as for most people, my parents’ relationship played a big role in how I see myself. I recognize that this was continuous and sometimes unconscious. Their love for Jesus, our neighbors, and many others. This affected not only how I see myself but also how I would like others to see me. I wanted to be loving, calm, caring, and collected.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yeah, one of the biggest music competitions I ever took part in caused me to reconsider my passion for music and actually led me to the Bass guitar. I was to take part in the piano solo competitions. I remember that as I was walking into the rehearsal rooms, I would hear crazy piano shredding going on, and I would think, ‘Are these the same people I am competing against?’ The rest is as you expected, I was number 9 in the competition. Now I understand that I was number 9 in an international competition, so it is not that bad, but for me, then, I was like, I have to choose another instrument, that’s when I switched to bass as my main instrument.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my friends would say I take theology and philosophy very seriously. I love discussions that have eternal ramifications. I enjoy talking about Jesus my lord and saviour and how He relates to my life and the world
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Well, I hope they will say my belief in Jesus was not only a theory but practical, that the songs i released helped generations and positively impact their eternity.
