Michelle (Miki) Henderson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Michelle (Miki) , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
When I’m not behind the chair helping clients transform their hair, you’ll often find me on the back of a motorcycle with my husband. We’re proud members of BACA — Bikers Against Child Abuse — a global organization dedicated to empowering children who have faced abuse and helping them live without fear. The mission is incredibly close to our hearts, and being part of something that gives kids a sense of safety and courage is deeply fulfilling. Whether I’m creating confidence in the salon or riding in support of our heroes, my passion is helping people feel stronger, braver, and more supported in their own journey.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Miki Henderson, and I’ve been behind the chair for 13 years — it’s truly both my life and my passion. I work alongside two incredible stylists, Mindi Cluck and Taylor Orrick, at Studio M Salon. What sets me apart is my commitment to constant growth and adaptability. Our salon is a safe, welcoming space for everyone, where we strive to create a calm yet fun environment for every guest who walks through our doors.
I specialize in blondes, lived-in looks, and my all-time favorite — bold, intense colors! I’m also proud to be an educator for JOICO, a role I’ve loved for nearly eight years. Sharing my knowledge and helping other stylists grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
Outside the salon, I’m married to my best friend, and together we have three beautiful children and a one-eyed cat who runs the house. We love riding motorcycles, spending time outdoors, and as parents of adult kids, we’re enjoying the exciting transition of rediscovering what we love to do together.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Without a doubt, my husband is my greatest inspiration. When I met him 15 years ago, I was a struggling single mom of two daughters, just trying to make ends meet. He was a hardworking, intelligent, and deeply loving man who showed me that the world is what we make of it. With his unwavering support, I enrolled in cosmetology school, eventually becoming a salon owner, educator, and — perhaps most importantly — my own confident, authentic self.
He taught me it was not only okay, but essential, to shine brightly and speak loudly for what I believe in. He has always been my rock, never once trying to tame the wild tornado I can be, but instead embracing it. He stepped into our lives and showed my daughters what it means to see their mom truly loved and happy, and what it looks like to be a real father. To this day, he remains the most amazing human I know.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Keep going, your adult self is amazing and the woman you always dream of!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
You have to work 80 hours a week and always be available.”
That’s one of the biggest lies you’ll hear. The truth is, when you find your people — the clients and community who truly value you — you’ll be forever grateful you didn’t burn yourself out trying to please everyone.
Set boundaries from the very beginning, and never be afraid to say no. Protecting your time and energy isn’t selfish — it’s what allows you to show up as your best self for the people who matter most.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes — every single day! I absolutely love my passion, my career, and my work space. When you love what you do, you never truly work a day in your life.
Through my career, I’ve built incredible bonds and found some of my closest friends. We travel together, we laugh together, and we proudly call ourselves “the Misfits.” Because of this career, I’ve met some of the most amazing humans — people I’m grateful to do life with every day.
