Hi Kimberly, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I started experimenting with makeup through hands-on learning years ago after watching beauty tutorials. Makeup quickly became my first love, and I loved seeing the results of my work and look recreations.

Not long into my experimentation process, I received makeup compliments from family, friends, and strangers. With these compliments came comments suggesting I should also do other people’s faces. These comments surprised me a bit because while I enjoyed doing makeup on my own face, I was nervous at the thought of applying it on others.

After dealing with this bout of nervousness and continuing my learning through tutorials, I did something I never thought I would do. I started doing makeup on family, friends, their referrals, and ultimately, clients. I was happy to see their smiles, their excitement, their confidence and knew I had found my purpose: enhancing people’s natural beauty and boosting their confidence.

I’m passionate about using my artistic talent to help others to look and feel their best through makeup application and have successfully applied my makeup skills and techniques on countless faces.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an experienced makeup artist (MUA) and owner of a beauty and makeup brand, Roxy Cosmetics, that I have been running since approximately 2018.

This idea for the Roxy Cosmetics brand originated from numerous client inquiries about the products I used during makeup applications. I had always entertained the thought of starting a business, and this sparked my interest.

Motivated by these inquiries, I swiftly researched the industry and market, makeup products, vendors, and supplies, and soon after, launched an online store offering a variety of luxurious yet affordable products.

After years of dedicating myself to mastering makeup and skincare through self-learning and consistent practice, I enhanced my skincare knowledge through the successful completion of an esthetician training program a few years ago. This additional training helped me to better understand the skin and its needs, which, in turn, strengthened my expertise in professional makeup artistry.

Through both my (MUA) services and Roxy Cosmetics brand, I have been privileged to assist a range of clients and customers with their makeup application desires and product preferences. I take great satisfaction in providing quality products that serve the beauty needs of customers while also playing a role in enhancing clients’ natural features, creating captivating looks for different occasions, and boosting their moods and confidence.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As I reflect on my business journey, the following three qualities were most impactful:

Passionate Skill-Building

Makeup is my first love, and I enjoy expressing my creativity through its application on clients who place their trust in me.

This passion has been the driving force behind my continuous dedication to honing my craft, perfecting my techniques, and expanding my knowledge of skincare and products to meet client needs and expectations.

The results have been truly remarkable:

I have become known for both creating beautiful looks that leave my clients satisfied and offering quality products that cater to the needs of my customers.

Dedication

I have remained focused on achieving success in this industry through my unwavering dedication in a few areas: learning and growing as an artist; delivering excellence in both makeup artistry and customer service; and offering quality products at affordable prices.

Though I have a strong commitment to success, this journey has not been without challenges, and resilience has been a vital companion to my dedication. It helps me to bounce back from setbacks, learn from experiences, and adjust my approach to align with my goals.

Sociability

Clients regularly compliment my warm, friendly, and outgoing nature. This natural ability to connect with clients and customers has always resulted in positive experiences.

I had never considered it, but looking back on my business journey, I now realize that this quality has proven instrumental in building trusting relationships and establishing a positive brand reputation.

It has consistently contributed to client and customer satisfaction, word-of-mouth referrals, collaboration and networking opportunities.

For those interested in improving or developing these qualities, I recommend the following activities for consideration:

Passionate Skill-Building: Hone your craft by exploring learning resources, practicing regularly, and applying what you learn in projects or real-life scenarios. Also engage with others in your industry or field to stay current.

Dedication: Make time to better understand your passion, purpose, and business. Understanding these three things will serve as the foundation for your dedication.

Sociability: Build relationships by listening to and understanding client needs and expectations. Be open to receiving, accepting, and implementing client feedback. Engage with others via online and offline networking opportunities and/or collaborations that match your comfort levels and values.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I have experienced both professional growth and personal improvement over the past 12 months.

On a business level, my biggest area of growth has been in marketing. Recognizing the ever-changing evolution of the industry, I dedicated the past 12 months to evaluating and adjusting my business’s marketing strategies.

I specifically focused on three types of marketing—content, collaborations, reviews, and testimonials— and have successfully expanded my reach and niche credibility through these efforts.

On a personal level, my biggest area of improvement has been the cultivation of patience. I have always found it challenging to remain calm in difficult situations or when faced with circumstances beyond my control.

Over the past year, however, I realized that impatience only increases my levels of anxiety, frustration, stress. Upon this realization, I began practicing patience over the past year, and I have witnessed its positive impacts on my overall health, well-being, and business.
