Patricia Schnall Gutierrez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Patricia Schnall, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I’m a morning person. I start with coffee on the balcony while watching the sunrise, then spend time in my journal. I write about what’s on my mind, usually something reflective, which often sparks ideas or sketches for current and upcoming projects. After that, I make my to-do list for the day—I rely on lists to stay on track. Then it’s off to the gym, which I’ve done my whole life. By 10;00, I’m on my way to the studio.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist, mother, partner, friend, and sister—roles I’m constantly balancing, and which deeply inform my work. Being a full-time artist is my profession, but it’s also the lens through which I explore life. My practice focuses on women’s roles—past and present—often drawing from my own experiences to create work that speaks to identity, resilience, and transformation. Every piece begins with observation and reflection, and I’m always looking for ways to translate those personal and universal stories into something visually compelling.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
There were two moments that truly shaped how I see the world—I’m a double cancer survivor, first at 36 and again at 62. Both times, I came away with the same realization: don’t put off the things you want or need to do. I don’t want to be the person who looks back with regrets for not following my dreams. That belief drives me to live the life I want, fully and without waiting for “someday.”
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Strength, and resilience – Success is rewarding, but struggle shapes you—it carves out a deeper capacity for gratitude, empathy, and determination.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Life is an illusion.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Believe it or not I actually have tap shoes. I purchased a new pair about eight years ago for a collaborative performance -so fun.
Those who know me know how excited I get over so many things; a great conversation, new ideas, a fabulous museum show, and fun times with friends and family. Of course I get excited over my accomplishments but the small stuff really makes me happy.
