We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tricia Copeland. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Tricia, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first ninety minutes of my day include breakfast, feeding the dog, stretching, and running. Getting in exercise early in the day centers me and helps me focus.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
An author and a podcaster, I aim to bring fun and inspiring content to readers. My books span multiple genres including women’s fiction, young adult fantasy, dystopian, and romance. The one theme that unites my work is showcasing powerful heroes and heroines who find their inner gifts and purpose. I call this finding their magic. I believe magic infuses every aspect of our lives, whether it is the magic of falling in love, discovering a new passion, seeing a beautiful sunset, or reading a book that transports us to another world.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I’ll broaden this question from a moment to an event. I never saw myself as a creative person. I studied biology and became a researcher. I decided to stay home to parent my children and I became a cook, chauffeur, teacher, entertainer, and nurse. When I attended my first book conference after having taken eight years to write, edit, and publish my first book was the first time I thought of myself as a creator.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I became anorexic as a young adult. That experience forced me to really look at my inner monologue, and not only examine, but share it. I hadn’t been taught to share feelings or fears. But opening up taught me that I was one of, not different or separate, that it is our human emotion that relates and binds us to one another, and that by sharing part of myself I allow others to share themselves. I believe this became my super power. By sharing my truth I allow others to share theirs, that their truth is beautiful, and to show them that they are special, they are unique, they are loved. I believe there is healing and power in sharing our thoughts, feelings, and unique experience with others.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
My most important cultural value is honoring others. I don’t think that whatever opinions I have are the only right ones. I love learning different viewpoints and reflecting on my own beliefs based on new opinions. I think each person deserves to be respected, listened to, and honored for who they are and what they believe.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
If we are thinking about this question strictly from a monetary perspective and measuring a dollar amount return on investment, I would say that my podcast will probably not earn me the 5% growth year over year that investing an hour’s worth of income into an investment account would. But, what I am gaining is joy, knowledge, and connection. I love talking to authors and learning what inspires them to write, how they create their stories, and what messages they hope to share. So, strictly from a money ROI, I will probably not earn money producing my podcast. But I will have learned a lot and hopefully connected authors with readers that will love their books.
