Jay Robertson of Bronx on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Jay Robertson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
To be honest, myself. I have been through many situations involving traumatic experiences and ended up losing myself entirely, only to re-build myself with the pieces that were my shattered image of myself. It took immense strength, perseverance and growth to pull myself out of that dark place. I’ve always been a person to smile and be motivational, even through bad times. I had little support throughout my childhood so dealing with my mental and spiritual health was something I had to figure out the hard way, through hard experiences, and I’ve succeeded in doing so. That is something many don’t see in me and it makes me be proud of the person who I’ve become today.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Yo yo. My name’s Jay and I’m on a journey of success to be a great composer for film, tv and games! I’ve always have had a passion for music since a very young age. I first found my music ears at the age of 5, during a school field trip to an art show which featured a live orchestra. I’m hearing the orchestra and feeling it touch my soul in ways it hasn’t been touched before, my ears were melting with a special joy and passion for music. As I aged throughout grade school, I played the clarinet and snare drum on a drumline. This was my first formal introduction to traditional music theory and percussion theory. As I learned more about music, I wanted to hear more variations and articulations, tension, movement, everything about music theory intrigued me as a child. I bought my first soundtrack for my CD player in 2005, which was the soundtrack to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Danny Elfman, and made it habit to continuously buy soundtracks after having seen the movie in theaters. I was that kid that stayed for the credits, not only to see who the composer was but also to hear the rest of an amazing piece of work! My favorite composers are a never-ending list but there a few that I truly enjoy listening to that motivate me to this day. Hans Zimmer being my all-time favorite, Alexandre Desplat, Harry Gregson-Williams, James Horner, Lorne Balfe, Secession Studios, Really Slow Motion, Two Steps From Hell, Peter Gundry, and many many more!

I’m currently (and finally), pursuing my passions in music. I’m currently studying at the Los Angeles Film School for my Bachelor of Science in Music Production (class on 2027). When I graduate, I’m planning on re-attending college for my Bachelors in Music Composition for Film, TV and Games and after graduating with my bachelors, I’ll be pursuing my Master of Music in Film Composition. My plans after finishing school is to put major focus on my upcoming music business, SyEn3rgy Music and record my own musicians and sounds for film and game sound design.

I am excited to finally be on the path that aligns with my soul’s calling and will be one of the best composers! My faith is strong and my will and determination, even stronger.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a being of light and experience. My third-eye was open unapologetically. I was the experience of freedom and analysis. When I lost myself throughout my traumas, I had to re-build myself and regain what was once lost. I now have a better understanding about who I am, my purpose, my goals and why I’m here. Though I don’t have all the answers, I’ve regain what was lost and have grown immensely throughout the past 34 years, and if I had to go back and experience it all over again, I would because I understand the lessons behind the trauma that has invented the person I am today and I’m blessed to have the ability to understand and conceptualize those experiences and extract the negative and consuming the positive, allowing for growth and true understanding of self. I followed what I was told I HAD to be and now, I follow what I know IS.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
In moments of adversity, a part of you awakens that can only be awakened through suffering. This cannot be taught, only learned. It is the flame that ignites inner guidance, intuition, strength, and resilience. When you’re truly suffering and you’re truly alone during those moments, with no support, and you have no choice but to figure things out for yourself, you come out on the other side shining like a diamond. In order for a diamond to become a diamond, it must face immense pressure for an extended period of time. The same happens for humans. We go through struggles and find out who we really are on the inside, where the soul is and needs to go. You find out who you are and what you’re truly capable of achieving. You come to know a deeper understanding of gratitude, respect, perseverance, independence, etc., that only comes from growth through the storm of adversity.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
The harder you fall, the greater the comeback. When we struggle, when we’re really going through something difficult and the future is unknown, overcoming those storms will upgrade you on a spiritual level. Many perceive themselves as weak when they go through it but it’s the exact opposite, you’re one of the strongest ones to be chosen to go through and live a hard life. God wouldn’t put you through anything you couldn’t handle, in fact, I believe that we choose our life paths before we’re born while in spirit. Like ordering off a menu at a restaurant. We choose our lives because we see who we become at the end and what kinds of growth experiences we’ve had throughout the lifetime. The struggle creates shining beings of light that have true understanding of life experiences in their own perspectives. Not everyone is chosen for such a difficult life task, only the strong are chosen or have chosen to live these lives. We forget who we are when we’re born and walk this journey of life to re-live and re-grow our spiritual self to the betterment of self and to know thyself.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
The constructs of life forces and truly understanding them. Karma, judgement, intentionality, spiritual rebirth/awakenings, manifestation, ego death, etc. Truly understanding and analyzing these constructs and how they work in relation to one’s life is accessing “cheat codes” to this game we all play called life. It has nothing to do with your diet, chanting and meditating, how nice you are to another, etc., it’s solely based around your life perspective and growth. Your decisions and how accountable you are holding yourself to being responsible for those decisions, what your intentions were behind those specific decisions, the lessons learned and how you carry yourself and the decisions you make moving forward will shape your reality and manifest the things you desire. Life has to be broken down into quantifiable understanding through strict analysis and self-reflection of one’s own actions and reactions. You’ll notice patterns and start to follow the “why” of each pattern. Once you have true understanding, you’re able to adjust those patterns and manifest the life you desire. It all starts with shadow work.
