We’re looking forward to introducing you to Steve Weil. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Steve, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Polo. Been riding Western all my life, but took up polo 2 years ago
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the 3rd generation of my family to run Rockmount Ranch Wear Mfg. Co. We are a Western apparel, hat and accessories manufacturer founded in 1946 by my grandfather Jack A. Weil who made the first shirts with snaps. He worked until age 107 and was the oldest ceo. We sell worldwide in 3 channels: wholesale, web and retail flagship.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandfather, Jack A. Weil. He was an entrepreneur and had passions for his work
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Working in a family business is both good and hard. All kinds of dynamics come into play and not all of them are rational. Its good to learn psychology which is not taught in B-school to navigate the complexity. It took me about 10 years to figure out how not to cause road blocks and how to make shifts in the ship’s course.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They may have been concerned by my choice to come back to Denver and work in the business but overtime they came to see my impact. They helped me navigate both the succession and success of the business
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Nothing. I like what I do
