Story & Lesson Highlights with Iris Savoy of Aquasco / Brandywine

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Iris Savoy. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Iris , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now is a balancing act between my full-time role at Giant Food and running Iris Nikki Photography. My mornings typically start early with work responsibilities, including coordinating sign distribution and managing vendor communication. After hours, I shift into creative mode—editing photos, responding to client inquiries, planning upcoming shoots, or creating content for social media. On weekends or evenings, I’m often out photographing concerts, branding sessions, or special events. It’s a full schedule, but I enjoy the variety and purpose each role brings to my day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Iris Savoy, and I’m the founder of Iris Nikki Photography, a concert, branding, and event photography business based in the DMV area. With over 20 years of experience in advertising and marketing, I pivoted into photography in 2018 to tell stories visually through powerful images. My work blends artistic expression with strategic branding, capturing everything from intimate artist performances to polished professional headshots. What makes my brand unique is the ability to move seamlessly between creative and corporate worlds—whether I’m shooting a jazz legend on stage or helping a businesswoman visually define her brand. I’m currently focused on expanding my services to more business and event clients while also sharing the untold stories of Black artists and entrepreneurs through my lens.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my father. He instilled in me the value of hard work and showed me that success requires consistent effort, even when you don’t feel like it. He always emphasized the importance of building relationships and staying committed to your goals. I remember watching him wake up early to study for the exam to become a drill sergeant in the Army Reserve and take classes at the community college to qualify for promotions at work. His dedication taught me that if I want something in life—whether it’s a home, a car, a degree, or a new job—I have to work hard to earn it. His example continues to motivate me today.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held me back the most in life is the fear of other people’s opinions. For a long time, I was a heavy people pleaser—constantly trying to earn approval and make sure everyone liked me. That fear shaped many of my decisions and kept me from fully expressing myself or going after what I truly wanted. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to let go of that mindset. I now focus more on doing what makes me happy and fulfilled, instead of living for the validation of others. It’s been freeing to prioritize my own voice over outside noise.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that I’m dependable, creative, and hardworking. They often mention how I’m someone who shows up, whether it’s for a big moment or just to listen when they need support. They admire my dedication to my photography and how I juggle multiple roles while still staying true to myself. They also say I have a strong sense of humor, a giving heart, and a way of making people feel seen and encouraged. Most of all, they appreciate that I keep it real and bring positive energy wherever I go.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
When I live my life on my terms.
