Story & Lesson Highlights with Dwayne Hewitt of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Dwayne Hewitt and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Dwayne, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wake up around 7am go to the bathroom to brush my teeth and do my skin treatment. After I take my dog for a walk and while walking around I look on instagram to find some inspiration post or video to start my day. I head to my computer design some clothing, look up some materials and find some manufacturers in LA. I take a little break and walk my dog around and bring him to the park to play around or with his friends. I had back home to get ready to work out and after grab something to eat at sliverlake Ramon or LA CAFE.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a fashion designer and my brand is called madebyofficial. MadeByOfficial has been around since 18’ but I started to take it serious around 21’. I started off by selling hats and I made some good money while doing it so I wanted to change up some stuff and introduce clothes as well. My friends and people on the street always liked the way I dress so I decided to come up with some pieces that everyone can wear but with a affordable price tag.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Honestly I was just some random person from the Bronx trying to get my name out there by any means. People told me I should to entertainment so I did YouTube and vine but at a certain point my line changed for me when I started working a clothing store. I saw the clothes they’re selling and I told myself “I can make something better” so I did. I got started by designing some “Tumblr” clothing but it didn’t go anywhere but later in 19’ people started to see me make pieces you can’t find in stores and that’s when I realized this was my passion.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I gave a few times, sometimes a few months but the longest was a year. All my friends kept calling me asking “when’s the next drop” but I didn’t have motivation until my friend had a sit down with me and told me to go all in or quit designing so I invested every to get back in the game.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
That if times get tough I figure something that will get me out of a situation or improve in life

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m home with my family and friends in NYC. You can work harder than others and take luxury vacation but there always feeling in your body that tells you it’s time to go home and relax.
