We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Becca Starling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Becca below.
Becca, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think imposter syndrome is never something you fully overcome. I think some days it is stronger than others. There will be random moments that you think to yourself, “Wow, I really am doing this very well”, and then there will be days that you have no confidence in your skills and abilities. I think that is all normal and okay!
I stopped trying to “overcome” the feelings like, “I’m not experienced enough for this” or “There are better options out there” and I started thinking differently. I was comparing myself to so many other entrepreneurs who were doing what I wanted to do and I started looking at where they started. Comparing their beginning projects to their current ones put into perspective that everyone has to start somewhere. You don’t have to start being the best in your craft, but you have to start so that you can one day be the best.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I take enormous pride in stating that Becca Starling Event Co crafts perfectly unique weddings and events. I started working in the hospitality industry at a young age. Each chance I had to see a little behind the scenes moment into another type of vendors work day I loved it. I was always so curious about each vendor and how they each operated to bring one giant, beautiful day together. The vendor I was always most interested in learning more from, was the wedding planners. I worked for an all inclusive wedding venue for a few months pre-covid and loved everything about the process. From meeting the couples, to working with them during the planning meetings, to executing the wedding day itself. After that, I searched high and low to build connections with planners in the area so that I could work under them to gain experience. If there is anything you need to know about the event industry, it is that experience and connections are invaluable.
After many friends asking me to plan their wedding, I knew it was time to launch the business I had been dreaming of. Becca Starling Event Co aims to make your wedding planning process seamless, exciting, and overall enjoyable. I often times here brides say that they hated the planning process, and we want to eliminate the things you hate so that you can enjoy the fun stuff! We handle collecting vendor quotes, communications, updates, and all the in between so that you can plan your bridal brunch, go dress shopping, build your registry, and all the bridal things you should soak in.
We offer Full Planning, Partial Planning, and Day of Coordination packages so that we can best fit our couples needs!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First, I believe that my willingness to learn every aspect of a wedding/event day, (not just the fun and pretty parts) sets me apart from most planners. The willingness and eagerness to fully understand and comprehend what each vendor needs to be successful is extremely important because events take a full team of people to execute flawlessly.
Secondly, I believe that the connections I have built/am continuing to build are one of the most impactful things for our business. As a wedding planner, I cannot be successful without a successful and professional team behind me. Because of this, I work diligently to build relationships with others in the area.
Lastly, determination to set out and finish what I started. I think one of the scariest parts of launching a business is the voice that is at the back of your mind saying, “What if I don’t like it and want to quit?”. I knew that was a lie I was telling myself. I knew that I would never not like weddings and events, but I was actually thinking, what if I am not good at it? I reminded myself that I don’t have to be the best in the industry yet, but I do have to be determined to always grow, learn, and take advice when needed.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I most often feel overwhelmed when I haven’t allotted any of my time for personal hobbies. Being a business owner fills up more time than a regular 9-5 does (in case you were looking to launch a business to work less, sorry to burst your bubble). When you start a business that you are passionate about it is so easy to let it consume your time and energy leaving your personal life feeling empty and overwhelmed.
I have to remind myself often that I need to take a step away to recharge so that I can do my best work when I am at work. Some of my hobbies that allow me to step away and refuel are pilates, cooking, gardening, traveling, trying new coffee shops, and spending time with my friends and family. It is extra important to take time to do things that refuel you when your job is a creative one. You will quickly start to feel burnt out or uninspired if you are not fueling your creative side in your personal life.
