We’re looking forward to introducing you to Becky Marshall. Check out our conversation below.
Becky, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I feel like others are struggling with self-worth and confidence in their abilities to follow their wishes and dreams. We all struggle with talking ourselves out of things out of fear, whether it’s of the unknown, failing, or our abilities to reach our goals.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I”m Becky and I’m a Chicago-based Thing Maker, someone who creates out of nothing, sees spaces from new angles, and knows real transformation starts with feeling and grit. With roots in interiors and theater, I’m the force behind Flipping the Flip, a resource for DIYers who want design that’s personal and empowering, as well as The Bake Dept and The AntiSign Shop. I’m smart with budgets, stubborn with obstacles, and believe our lives should be bold, expressive, and unapologetic.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad. He was dedicated, thorough, thoughtful, creative, saw things from multiple angles before deciding what was right, strong in the face of adversity, and honed his craft unlike any other in his field. He showed me what integrity was and how to stand by it.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is horrible, of course, as we all know, and it’s a tough thing to get through without a doubt. In a sense, suffering can be seen as a (albeit hopefully short-term) limitation, if you will, in the same sense as the phrasing of you can’t know what true happiness is without sadness. As much as we all don’t want to suffer, there are a lot of lessons in it, especially when it pulls apart and reveals more of yourself to believe in and grow from.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Right now, I’m working on a new DIY interiors guide called The $100 Room Glow-Up Guide, carving out space and time to promote the free cheat sheet with three tips to get one going, as well as complete the guide itself. It’s taken a few turns of direction since I began but each turn is creating a more powerful and more functional guide that literally anyone can use.
What differentiates this project is that it’s based on feeling, believing in yourself, and your power to not only enhance where you live but also how you live. The premise is that one can transform a space based on feeling for less than $100.
I feel so deeply about this guide and it can help people that I’m fully committed to seeing it through and bringing it to the world, no matter how long it takes.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I can, and do, because it’s important to me and me alone. I personally don’t do things for praise as I’m the person I live for and ultimately, knowing I gave my best is what keeps me going. To keep trying, to keep at it, to keep improving, and what’s most freeing.
